19. What’s your favorite character headcanon?
I’m assuming this is for IZ and I’m also assuming it means what’s my “favorite” character headcanon instead of my “favorite character” headcanon, which are two completely different things. With that said (and consider this big grasping in the dark stuff since I haven’t rewatched the show in ages) I have the HC that Zim is, at the very least, a crazy genius. I mean he was defective from the start, yet his society (one that’s know not to be kind of people they deem inferior) somehow let him go all the way through Elite Training and also provided him with the means to create an energy hungry abomination? What sense does that make? To me one way to explain this was that Zim had something to offer that made up entirely for all his drawbacks, at least for a good while, much more than simply his blind loyalty to the Empire. And that could have been an actual genius mind!
He did create that abomination, after all, and I’m thinking the moment where the abomination devoured an entire Tallest (two actually, if I remember correctly) was the moment where Zim’s crazy genius stopped making up for all his defects and he was deemed a threat. And Zim, who had up until then enjoyed a bit of a weird but positive status in his society (I mean he has to have had at least a few fans, it’s not every day where an irken as tiny as he is gets so far up the social ladder… it could also explain why he thinks so highly of himself, if he was used to a kind of positive attention usually only reserved to irken of much higher status) broke under the reality of all the chaos and destruction he had caused and his mind, in an effort to protect itself, made up an entire new reality where anything that dared dispute the truths he so far understood as real (Zim is great, the Tallests love him, he’s a valued irken and deserves praise) got regarded as a lie, a trick or straight up non-existent.
That to me helps explain a lot of his behaviours throughout the series, and I also think once enough time passes and maybe reaches another breaking point (whatever that could be) that makes him realize the reality he lives in now that could mean a lot of his attitudes and behaviour could change drastically.
