Character Rambles: Shannon Westerberg

I was reading this:

And I have multiple thoughts

When getting into Robot Jones, I was learning more about the supporting characters aside from the titular character themself.

Shannon Westerberg is the love interest for Robot, and a quite controversial one in fact. From what I can observe from the older fandom activity, she is too mean to Robot and their feelings, especially in season 2 episodes "Summer Camp" and "Rules of Dating". Some argue that that is flanderization, while I argue that, when it comes to kids, she's practically fed up. Maybe at first she was trying to be nice since Robot is the only robot in school, and she and the other students should be nice to them, and maybe something good (like getting answers on the Scantron test) would come in return.

By then, in season 2, Shannon took absolute notice of Robot's behavior and wanted none of it, pretty much fed up. I don't blame her, especially in the noted unmade episode "Obsession," where Robot is going through plans that could be considered too far, thanks to his Mom Unit's obsession with a talk show. Both of the characters are flawed as most of the time, Robot is doing what THEY believed Shannon would like, not really getting to truly know her, except for "House Party." (more or less)

Some fans that I observed wanted her to be nicer, and some do want them to be together. However, I personally don't ship Robot n Shannon bc it would not be fair for both of them. She clearly does not like them, and if the ship "works," that means Shannon has to lie about her feelings towards Robot. Robot is growing with more observations of humanity, and initially he fell in love with her because she is "more metal than most humans" (a group he doesn't like that much).

Especially on the pitch bible page, where it was explicitly stated that she and Robot were never meant to be together given the premise of its pilot concept "230 Volts of Lovin", in which its idea of "three step plan to get Shannon to go out with him" translates to the rules in the final WHTRJ episode.

Now, come to think of it, the final episode's premise, "Rules of Dating," was written before the majority of the rest of the series, solidifying the idea that she and Robot are never meant to be a couple or endgame.

Don't get this twisted. I love the character Robot Jones, but I also do love to see more of Shannon as her own character, other than being the focal love interest of Robot. Let her be meaner, actually. I don't want her to reciprocate her feelings for Robot because she deserves somebody better in the future. They're only kids, let them play around and find out.
