What's a good length for the "why UChicago?" essay? My current draft is almost 1.5k words. Is that way too much?

Yes. Do your admissions officer a solid and cut it down.

If you’re unsure where to start, I recommend looking at what you’re saying and divide it into “why Uchicago is awesome” and “why this specfic thing about Uchicago (that is unique to UChi) matches this specific thing about me”. Delete all of the former. As a start, here are some good candidates for deletion:

Generic “Chicago is a great city”

Anything about the beauty of the campus

"Big libraries!" (Yes, we have them. So do a lot of schools. Unless it’s something particular to the U of C libraries, pass.)

"I like Dr Who and UChi is nerdy" ~ (do you know how many people could say that? It’s a lot. being a nerd is not a guarantee of good fit, so leave it.)
