Just a reminder from George R. R. Martin himself-
"Only the novels (and the Dunk & Egg novellas) are canon.
The videogames, the board games, the card games, the comic book, even the television shows... all great in their own right, I hope, but still secondary. The books are canon. Nothing else."
"Only the books are canon."
"Nothing is actually canon until it appears in the novel."
"If I change it, the version in the books is canon. The spin-off products are fun, but not canon."
In case anyone is still confused about what is canon in the ASOIAF series.
I looooove TLM and was wondering when did Din start to fall in love with Cyare? I felt their relationship really started to change after he called her beautiful in chapter 5.
Oh I love this question!
So there are like, stages of falling in love, right. And different types of love.
I think the first time Din felt affection for her was when she offered to take the blame and punishment for the bartender’s clumsiness. The selfless kindness she was offering in that moment is just so far from anything he’s experienced in a long time, and he’d be a dirty liar who lies if he didn’t admit to feeling something from that.
I think the first time he felt respect for her was when she didn’t even flinch when he alluded to cutting his losses to everyone and everything if it meant keeping the child safe. That sentiment is pretty brutal, and she just accepted it and gave it right back to him. His heart fluttered, I know it, I feel it.
She definitely endeared herself when she tried to wait up for him in chapter 3. He’s never had anyone care whether he comes back or not, certainly not at their own expense. And the fact she barely knows him at this point, and now he’s on the receiving end of that kindness? No way, he knows he’s a goner and he’s trying to hold out.
The biggest shift is probably in chapter 4 though. Like, sure, we see him protect her and care for her in chapter 5, but the moment she gives him sass, he’s smiling under his helmet. Doesn’t remember the last time someone made him laugh. And then she puts him in his place, because he underestimated her and even though she’s obviously intimidated and skittish around him, she’s choosing to trust him for the sake of the kid. It’s not like, objectively, she has a lot going for her. She’s been a slave, she’s been under men’s thumbs, she’s impaired.
But she’s got her pride and her honor because of course she wouldn’t hurt a baby, of course she’s smarter than he would give her credit for. She’s got more acumen, more ingenuity than most full fledged warriors in battle he’s seen, and she doesn’t have a scrap of beskar. And doesn’t need it.
I’m pretty sure that’s the moment he falls in love. How could he not name her Mesh’la.
Thank you for coming to my TED talk.
