“You can’t play with us,” one of the boy’s announce the second she walks over to them. They’re playing some sort of game that she’s never seen before, bouncing a ball off the wall and chasing after it, though it seems to be more complicated than that. For every time somebody catches the ball the rest of the boys run at the wall.
A different boy speaks up this time, it’s Kili, he’s in her class, and rolls his eyes and says, “Because girls are supposed to play pretend house. They can’t play wall ball.”
“Why not,” she asks again.
“Because it’s the rules.”
“That’s a dumb rule,” she replies, sticking out her tongue at him, “I bet you’re just afraid I’d beat you!”
“Am not,” Kili answers quickly; he’s the reigning champion at the game from what she’s gathered, and doesn’t take too well to a girl thinking that she’d be better at it than them.
“What about a wager then,” Tauriel says, “let me play one game and if I beat you,” and she was confident that she would, “then I can play whenever I like.”
“Then,” she pauses, thinking up a good enough guarantee, “I’ll never ask to play again.”
Ten minutes later when she’s the new champion of wall ball, she tries not to look too smug at the disappointed look on her classmates face. Though that doesn’t stop Tauriel from bragging about it to the whole class the next time their teacher sits them down for sharing hour.
