WhyJae - “Came Up” (feat. Tedy Andreas)
SXSW 2017 - OEB Score: 8; Popularity Index: 4
Pairs Well With…Vince Staples, Jay Prince, Joey Bada$$
WhyJae’s latest mixtape is actually by an alter ego, morphing into Lil Rarri for a hard-hitting, trap explosion on Lil Rarri EP. Surly synths and autotune distort Lil Rarri tracks in a pop, dance floor way. In terms of new singles since our 2016 review, like “30K” and “Randy Moss”, WhyJae is just about the opposite of Lil Rarri, crystal clear and keeps thing minimal more often than not.
2016 Review: Emerging rapper WhyJae has been striking gold with his latest singles, strong willed follow-ups to his impressive debut full-length Timeless. That record was a great show of both WhyJae’s rapid, lyrical flow and his choice of thick textured beats. In a style that’s more Chicago than his Houston home, WhyJae bounces in space and pop beats alike. His rhymes have a classic nature, street-focused with individual style. By loading so much into every stanza, continuously progressing, WhyJae is able to keep intensity even when his beats move to sparse soundscapes. Recent singles “Understand” and “The Interview” follow the groundwork that WhyJae laid down on Timeless, but add a little more shoulder shaking grooves and a shined down sound all around.
WhyJae Opts For A New Moniker & Sound On 'Lil Rarri' EP [@imwhyjae #lilrarri]
WhyJae Opts For A New Moniker & Sound On ‘Lil Rarri’ EP [@imwhyjae #lilrarri]
WhyJae opts for fun on his first EP as Lil Rarri. Lil Rarri, short for Lil Ferarri has been one of WhyJae’s monikers for a little while now. The Houston rapper has made plenty of fans with his verbal dexterity and engaging flow. In December of 2014, he released his debut full-length Timeless and followed it up with 30MLFTI this past March. Now he’s making the Lil Rarri moniker an actual thing…

Dion Waiters - Lil Skrt Ft WhyJae
This guy Lil Skrt seemingly out of nowhere pulls up with a breakout hit with Houston's own WhyJae, or Lil Rarri; Whichever you prefer. "Dion Waiters" encompasses a spritzy trap inspired instrumental. It brings out a very melodic vibe over the course of the entire track. The two trade verse over the unique soundscape. This Lil Skrt guy seems to have something going for him, he may be a artist to watch.
