“Excuse me! What do you think you're doing?”

SHE COULDN’T HEAR HIM. He was speaking, but she was on a different planet. What he had said had done nothing but leave a hole in her stomach. Another few words from him and the bile at the back of her throat rose to make itself present; stumbling off the rough sheets she threw herself against the trash can and emptied her lunch.
She felt a hand on her back and she slowly lifted her head.
“YOU'RE GOING TO BE ALRIGHT.”
Again, it was lost on her. She slowly stood, body shaking like a leaf in the fall. With a gentle shake of her chin she nodded. With her bag in her hand she walked out of the building. It was as though she was in another body. The world around her was nothing but an illusion. All she'd believed was a lie. All she'd loved was gone.
She was at the door of her house before she had time to register what had happened. A limp hand opened the door. The familiar smell of home went in one nostril and out the other, offering her no comfort. The purse slipped out of her hands and made it's home on the ground while it's owner settled herself onto the couch. With an exhausted sigh she lost the energy to simply walk to her room and collapse in bed.
Another hand on her back, and the familiar touch made bile rise in her throat again. It was late, so the other child they shared was in bed. She eased away from the touch, scooting her butt over slightly. Her eyelids shut and her tired head came to rest in the palms of her hands.
What felt like hours passed before she spoke up. “I LOST the baby.”

"Look at you. Congratulations on the promotion."

Em couldn't help but look over at this beautiful brunette and stare. She may have been working, the laptop suggesting so. The nerve to get up and lend company was hard, especially since she had social anxiety. For all she knew, she could've been straight, married, or simply not interested. Turning back, she covered her face with her hands.
So embrie waited, stirring her coffee as time passed back. Finally gathering the courage to walk over, she did. "Hi, erh. Can I sit here?" She felt already embarrassed, trying not to laugh at herself.
