It's A Good Time To Go To Fenway
When I moved to Boston in 2011, the Boston Red Sox were in the midst of an epic collapse that eventually led to missing the playoffs. Knowing the history of the team and that they were still in contention for the playoffs, I figured I'd have to wait until the next season for my first visit. Oh how I was wrong. Once August and September come around, if the Red Sox aren't in contention, tickets plummet in prices on Stub Hub. Check out the prices for some upcoming games. Especially for weeknight games, you can get a ticket for less than $10!
I understand the Red Sox are struggling, but they still have some entertaining players and are playing against good playoff teams like the Orioles. A night at Fenway is also something to enjoy on its own. It doesn't make sense that these tickets are so cheap. This is a great example of the Red Sox success working against them. Most of the season is sold out early on, making it impossible to buy directly from the team and forcing fans to resort to secondary market sites such as Stub Hub. Well when these fans (or scalpers really) bought these tickets they thought they'd be selling for an important game with playoff implications. When it becomes the complete opposite scenario, they try to sell the tickets off for as much as they can get, not wanting to be left holding it on the night of the game. Advantage consumer.
It's also interesting that there still isn't a strong market for these tickets from fans who don't normally go to games. I'd chalk that up to the spoiled fan base. Three World Series titles in the last ten years can do that. As a Pittsburgh Pirate fan I can't imagine that. I'm fine if Red Sox fans don't want to go, I'll be happy to take advantage of those cheap tickets. That September 8th game is looking mighty nice to me.
