The village of Wickmere

The Centre of the Universe lies hidden just a few miles from the North Norfolk coast. Well, that's the phrase that was used about the village by one of the people who lived there!

Wickmere isn’t really on a route to anywhere, so if the name doesn’t sound familiar, that’s not surprising. It is close to Wolterton Hall, though, which might help set you in the right direction.

Archaeological evidence proves that people lived in Wickmere in prehistoric times and continued to do so through Bronze, Roman and Norman Ages; so proving that even then the inhabitants appreciated the tranquil and picturesque area.

Until recently nearly all the residents were born in the village and were employed at the nearby Wolterton Hall which was built by the diplomat brother of Prime Minister Sir Robert Walpole.

The village is home to St Andrews Church a fine example of Saxon architecture featuring a classic round flint tower, one of over 150 similar churches that can be found in Norfolk.

It may not have the facilities of bigger villages, but it’s still quite a thriving place, with many young children and a healthy mix of born-and-breds and newbies
