I’m so, so glad I got to participate in WICOMICON yesterday! The Universal Fancon situation is such a mess, and it was so upsetting to watch it unfold. Seeing the organizers pull of a legit miracle in under a week, and make something amazing for the people who believed in Fancon’s mission statement, was incredible.
Fandom is, should be, and always has been a space that belongs to the people Fancon claimed to be working for: people of color, women, queer and disabled and otherwise marginalized fans. We keep getting written out of the history, but we’ve always been here, we’ve always built amazing things for our fellow fans, and we’ve always been capable of achieving miracles. It’s nice to see another reminder of that, and to be a part of it.
This isn’t done yet, but it’s a start on a Universal Fancon alternate event guide. Message me or leave a comment if you've got something to add. And I still need restaurant recommendations! It doesn't seem fair to just put the ones I really like.
