Fruits Basket

So I am so hype for the new Fruits Baskets anime that is coming out. I am going to an anime convention in May and I plan to cosplay Haru as a cow for one of the days that I am there. It has been so difficult to find a wig that matches closely to his hair so I had to dye a wig. To be honest this is the first time I am ever dying a wig and I do not think I am doing that bad of a job. I can’t wait until it is completely finished because I wan’t to show it off. I love cows and that is one reason why Haru is one of my favorites from the series. He is literally like my spirit animal in a way. I can be so calm but instantly I can get triggered into getting annoyed and pissed off by anything I find ignorant. I am nervous that this wig is honestly going to come out looking like crap but its my first time so I am trying not to be so hard on myself about it. I just want all my cosplays to be perfect to me. That is what I get for being a perfectionist. I know over time I will get better at this stuff, I mean, I already am improving. I have been cosplaying for a few years now so I know I have improved in my abilities. 

I am so hype for this anime and I cannot seriously wait to watch it when it comes out. I wanted to cosplay this in honor of it being remade and coming out. I hope those of you that are Fruits Baskets fans are also looking forward to it. Who is your favorite character or characters? Mine is Haru but I also love Kyo!

giving the floof a better dye. @littlesongbirdcosplay recommended these dyes called Jacgard piñata colors. its way more vibrant than it was for Metro or even Momo. Before I was using copics because that's what I had, and they were drying out so I didnt care. Who's going to Afo? I'll be there on Saturday!

Dip Dying A Wig Tips

A while ago, I decided to dip dye a wig because I couldn't find a red and green wig that I liked. I used this video and this wikihow article as references. Neither of which use Rit Dye so no heat (yay!). I think both the video and the article were pretty useful to use for learning how to approach dip dying a wig, but I wanted to share what I found to work, not work, what I wish I did, some final thoughts, and the end result of my dip dying adventure.

Warning: this isn't a tutorial; just my experience in dying a wig.

What worked:

Alcohol ink mixed w/the isopropyl alcohol. I couldn't find acrylic ink and I didn't want to ruin my markers, but I did find alcohol ink.

Shallow cups to dip the ends of the wig into. Using a spray bottle would have given me so much less control of how much of the strands were dyed.

Wooden stir/craft sticks to help coat the strands in the dye. I couldn't use my hands to coat the strands (because I was alternating between colors and couldn't risk transferring color from my glove to the wrong strands of hair), using a stir stick was extremely helpful. I mostly used the sticks to push the hair into the dye when the strand wasn't being cooperative.

Tying a bag over the red(pink) strands before moving on to dye the green. This helped prevent color transfer from both the red and the green onto the other strand while I was doing the green parts.

Having paper towels. Dying a wig is super messy (even if you're only dying the ends), so having paper towels was helpful in getting some of it off my gloves before turning the wig.

What didn't work:

Paint+alcohol. If I'd let the paint dye solution sit and become completely mixed before I used it, it might have worked, but I didn't and ended picking paint clumps out of the test strand.

Dying it red. The red ink + white wig = pink strands. I most likely would have needed to dye the pink strands way way more to make them red. (I'm still going to refer to the pink strands as red because it's the color of ink I used)

Only having one pair of gloves. This nearly ruined the wig when I had to turn it (even with paper towels to wipe off excess) because even being extremely careful and getting rid of excess dye, there comes a point where there's just too much dye on your gloves and no way to not have some of it transfer. Thankfully, I got lucky and found another 2 pairs of gloves to use.

What I wish I did:

Work on the wig in a place I could have walked around the wig. I still think working on it in the bathroom was a smart idea (though my dad wasn't pleased with the pink stains in the tub), but given that my gloves were covered in ink and I only wanted to dye the bottom of the wig, being able to walk around the wig while working on it would have made things a whole lot easier. Because I had to be careful about getting the dye on the top of the wig, I couldn't properly work the dye into the strands of hair I was working on which made it hard to get an even dye job on each strand.

Used a bowl for the dye. While the cups worked, they were just too small for the amount of dye I needed. I needed so so so much more than I thought and ended up mixing at least 8 batches of red and 5 of green.

Worn gloves during clean up and rinsing the wig. My fingers are pink because of my hubris. (Granted, part of that hubris is because while rinsing the wig a few of the red strands were almost back to white by the time the water ran clear so I re-dyed it without putting on gloves.)

Final Notes:

Idk why but the green faded less after rinsing even though I used less green dye. Maybe it was the ink I was using or maybe it was the wig, but the red didn't want to dye the wig.

The red stained the very top of the wig a very very very light pink (almost white) so I should definitely have either changed gloves more often or done this in an area I didn't have to keep turning the wig.

My result:

The wig is prettier in person, but the white strands in the pink and the inconsistency of how dark or light the pink is drives me nuts.
