Catching up with Dan Weller-Evans

Back to back starts this weekend! How did it feel getting a run in net for the Raiders Dan?

Yeah, that was a bit of a surprise! But it was great, especially to get a 4 point weekend and qualification in the cup (I think)! I think that was the first time for the Raiders in 4 years that I’ve started both games in a weekend and I really enjoyed it. Hopefully it is something I get to do more as I gain more experience. It’s a lot of fun playing games, but I know that there is a lot more work to do before I get regular starting minutes.

Despite a couple of blips the Raiders have had a great season so far, how hard is it to keep focus when things are going well?

Yeah we’ve started very well; going into Christmas in first place is always a good thing. As a team we aim to be competitive right until the end of the season, so we all focus on that the whole way through. We have a set of goals that Jeremy gives us at the start of the year and in individual/team meetings throughout the season so it’s not easy to lose focus.

With the recent news coming from the London Raiders, do you think fans will start to understand just how tight the budget is in the NIHL?

I think so; it’s a strange but obviously horrible situation that London are in right now. What I found strange was that 3 of the guys played against us on Saturday. I don’t know whether they knew at the time or not but they certainly played as if nothing was wrong. But I think some fans already know having experienced it with other teams. I grew up watching the Basingstoke Bison when they were in the elite league and they certainly had a lot of trouble with budget for one reason or another. But there are teams at every level of hockey in this country who will struggle with their budget with reasons varying from team to team. Hopefully London manage to see out the season and stay competitive, which I’m sure they will. We have a very strong rivalry with them and the league would suffer without them.

The Raiders are scoring for fun this year, but are arguably not as defensively solid as in previous seasons. Is that something the team are conscious of or simply a factor in being a more free-flowing attacking team?

Yeah the guys are having no problem putting the puck away, all of our forwards are capable of scoring goals this season. They all have awesome shots and they seem to be clicking with one another. Even if Corny changes the lines it doesn’t seem to affect the guys. I think the defensive issues are starting to disappear and it was just a blip. I honestly think we have the best defensive core in the league. They all block shots and do what they can to help us goalies out. We were conscious that we were conceding too many goals and we have done a lot of defensive zone coverage in practise which seems to be doing the trick. We have a lot of tough games coming up so it’s the perfect test.

In our last interview you spoke about the influence of Matty Colclough. Which other keepers would you pick out from around the NIHL?

Yeah Matty is a big influence on me. He helps me out a lot and he’s obviously one of if not the best goalie in the league so it would be stupid of me not to take his advice. This past weekend he helped me a lot in the two games and was always talking to me after warm ups and between periods on what I could do, he also went through the goals against with me and told me what he would have done in those situations. This obviously gives me another point of view and helps me to do better next time I play.

There are a lot of good goalies in our league, but the ones who stand out to me other than Matty would be Chris Douglas in Invicta and Ryan Bainborough and Ben Clements in Chelmo. I’d say they are the top 4 goalies in the league and they are a major factor in the success their teams have! Another goalie who I think will be one to watch is Dennis Bell in MK/Haringey (NIHL 2) He has played 2 very good games against us this year and seems to be one for the future.

Simon Hobbis has just been called up to GB u18s, in recent years a number of players have joined the Raiders on two way or short term contracts before playing for EPL or EIHL teams. What do you think attracts them to the island?

Yeah that’s great news that Hobbis has been called up, it’s very much deserved. He is a good guy both on and off the ice and hasn’t looked out of place since day 1 with the team. He plays regular minutes with us and has formed a solid D pairing with Damo.

I think Jeremy is a major reason a lot of players drop down to play for us. He has a lot of contacts in different leagues and he believes in giving people a chance to earn ice time and play games when they may not be getting any ice time with their team. But also the team is well known throughout the country from its days in the EPL and I think this would help. I don’t know the ins and outs of recruitment but I assume these factors help.

Last but not least. The league is considered to be a three way race, who do you consider the bigger threat, Chelmsford or Invicta?

Wow, that’s a tough one! I think a lot of people don’t see us as favourites and we are more than happy to keep going along as we are. It’s probably not the answer you were looking for but this year I can’t really call it between those two teams. If I had to I’d have to say Chelmsford because in the past we seem to have less success against them than Invicta over the course of the season. We still have to meet both of those teams a few times this season so we’ll see what happens, but they are certainly two very skilled teams, especially offensively.

An Interview With Nathan Taylor

  A great start to the season for the Raiders, where the team have not only won but looked dominant. How do you keep that momentum going without losing focus?

Yeah I think we have had a great start this year. We just make sure we all come to work and stick to our own jobs and hopefully the wins keep coming.

This will be your fourth season with the Raiders and you seem to have really found a home on the island. What is it about the Raiders and the Isle of Wight that first attracted you?

Yeah it is a great place to live and a great team to play for. When Corny asked me to come and play for him I did a bit of research and I knew a few guys that played here in the past. They all said it was a good place to play and a good club to be part of. I think playing with Corny in the past also helped with my decision to move.

You’ve missed some time this season with a shoulder injury, how is it feeling now?

My shoulder is healing nicely I feel like I am almost 100%

For those who haven’t seen you on the ice, how would you describe your style of play?

I would say I am a defensive minded forward who always gives 100% in any situation.

Jeremy has looked to deploy you more in offensive situations to maximise on your speed and stick-handling, but you’re also a reliable defensive player. Which side of the game comes more naturally to you?

I am certainly more defensive. So I would say the defensive side comes more naturally than goal scoring.

Looking around the league there are some great players, are there any names you dread seeing on the opposition team sheet?

I wouldn't say I dread seeing any names on the team sheets. It all depends on who is having a good game.

Outside of the Raiders are there any other teams whose results you look out for?

Yeah I always like to have a look at Whitley Bay results, because it is my home team and who I watched growing up.

The Raiders have a very strong line-up, but if you could add one player to the team who would it be and why?

That's a tough question. I can think of a few players I would like to add but I couldn't see where they would fit in because we have 3 strong lines this year.

An Interview With Matt Vizzari

Hey Matt, thanks for giving up your time. How are you settling in on the island?

I’m settling in well, finally starting to figure out where everything is on the island.

You played in Germany last year, how are you finding the smaller ice pad in Ryde?

 It’s a whole different game on the small ice, a lot more physical and obviously you have a lot less time and space to make plays. I’m finding it a little difficult at first to really adjust to it but I’m starting to feel a lot more comfortable now. 

You’re a goalscoring player but aren’t afraid to throw yourself into the more physical side of the game either, are there any players you model your game on?

No not really this is the way I have always played the game. Always trying to throw the body around to create more space for my line mates and me.

You’ve been nursing a shoulder injury and also took a puck to the face a couple of weeks ago, how are you feeling now?

Ya it was definitely a rough week for me but I am feeling better everyday, been doing a lot for my shoulder to get it back up to 100%, not quite there yet but definitely getting there.  

The Raiders have started well and you’ve put up solid numbers, are you finding the game coming a little easier as you’ve come to know your teammates better?

Ya absolutely building chemistry is a key part of hockey and a key part to a lot of teams success, its always tough coming into a new team you don’t really know what to expect but we have a good group of guys in the room who are all easy going and easy to get along with so it makes it a lot easier.  

What attracted you to the Raiders, had you thought about playing in the UK before the team contacted you?

Surprisingly enough one of the big factors is the language barrier. It makes it a lot easier everyday knowing that you can communicate with people on the street and your teammates. Also the fact that the Raiders have a winning history, its nice to know that your going to a winning team and are competing with the best teams in the league every night.

MK Thunder @ Wightlink Raiders, NIHL S1 Cup

Thunder 0-10 Raiders

Before the game itself the team paid tribute to Richard Hargreaves Senior who sadly passed away this week. Hargreaves is a legend around the club and any player or official who met him will tell many stories of his legendarily bad jokes and his uncanny ability to cheer anyone, no matter how down they might be. After a minutes silence, Richard’s sons Richie and Mike came out onto the ice for a ceremonial puck drop and Richie also spoke to the crowd later in the evening and caught up with Wightlink Raiders TV who will post a short interview soon too.

It’s fair to say that the result never looked to be in doubt, the Thunder arrived with just 10 outfield skaters and one goalkeeper, whereas the Raiders were at almost full strength (Compton and Trendall were absent and Matt Vizzari was rested after carrying an injury for the last few weeks).

Starting with Matt Colclough between the pipes the Raiders were consistently dominant and took the lead with only 1 minute and 22 seconds on the clock as Craig Tribe slotted the puck away from a Richard Nembhard. The team would continue as they started with further goals from Steven Osman, Corey Watkins and Dan Pye to see the Raiders into first break with a comfortable lead.

The team re-emerged looking slightly different after their rest as backup keeper Dan Weller-Evans, fresh from celebrating his 20th birthday on Friday, took the crease. Looking assured (and, on occasion, bored), Weller-Evans showed he isn’t just there to open the door for players leaving the ice! The Raiders would carry on as they started with goals from Nembhard, Kieran Annis who once again showed his worth on the penalty kill, Ben Lock with his first career goal and sniper Alex Barker cropping up on the score sheet.

The third period would see a flagging Thunder allow two powerplay goals, from Jeremy Cornish and Barker with his second (from Richard Facey  who completed a hattrick of assists), before slowing things down and running out the clock. It will have been a tough scoreline to swallow for the visitors who all played with their hearts on their sleeves.

The Highs

A big result for the Raiders that will have done wonders for their confidence ahead of a tricky trip to The Hive today to take on Bracknell.

Nembhard continues to play decent minutes and is showing himself to be a consistent and hardworking team member.

Annis and Watkins are both looking superb. Playing hard, chasing the puck into the corners and fighting for every turnover.

It’s a rare delight to see Dan Weller-Evans in net. He made some good saves, particularly a split second catch early in the third that, were anyone filming, would be one for the highlight reel! Ricky Attrill got a good run out, playing regular shifts that will help him gel with his team, whilst fellow forward Nathan Taylor made a return from injury and immediately threw himself into the fray.

The Lows

Despite the scoreline the team were still a little prone to turning over the puck in their own end and were sometimes slow on the counter. The imminent return of Nick Compton will invariably help in this regard.

Matt Vizzari sat the game out. While it’s probably fair to say he hasn’t had the impact expected of him, the team still missed his never-say-die attitude and it’s to be hoped that he will return soon as his range of passing is a particular asset on the wider ice of most other rinks in the league.

Freezing The Puck favourite Yousif Abu Saaada didn’t skate in the third period. Suffering a deep bruise on his left arm it was wisely decided that he should rest and ice the injury rather than making it worse before another game tomorrow.

The Opposition

The scoreline really doesn’t do MK Thunder justice. Turning up with a very young team they showed a lot of talent and determination and, were they not stretched so thin, would probably cause teams a fair bit of trouble. The lack of a rink and practice facility is really hurting them, which is a sad state of affairs for a team who, a few seasons ago, could go toe to toe with anyone in the league.

Netminder Denis Bell played phenomenally well, facing 84 shots over the course of the game and at one point being forced to headbutt pucks out of the way.

It was nice to see Sam Cheema take to the ice, he's a young talent we really like here at FTP and Nidal Phillips is  an impressive counter-attacking talent, bursting out of his own zone with pace and power.

Most impressively the whole team played with their heads up and despite the obvious frustration they kept giving everything and making the Raiders really work for their win.

Final Thoughts

A much needed win for the Raiders and the mood around the team was noticeably lighter when the buzzer ended the game. Hopefully they’ll carry the form with them at Bracknell today.

An Interview With Alex Barker

  Hey Alex! The Raiders have started the season very strongly and are unbeaten in the league, what has been the catalyst for such good form?

It has been a great start and it is always the way that the teams that win or get points when they haven’t played at their best that are in the hunt for winning silverware. We have a solid team from our goaltending up to our forwards. Our D have been chipping in with important goals and assists and Matty has been pulling off some incredible saves! I think that we have a good balance within the team and a great group of guys that make training enjoyable but with the right intensity.

  How do you feel you’re bedding in with your teammates so far? You’ve certainly been in a rich vein of form so far!

 Well I haven’t bedded any yet but there have been a few offers flying around the room for sharing beds. It’s been great, it’s always strange at first especially to come into a room where most of the guys played together the year before and there have only been a few changes. But everyone made the transition really easy. The usual pranks in the room help with the team bonding and especially where quite a few of us live on the main land and travel together it makes the team bonding easier. It also helped that I know a few of the guys and have played with some of them before. It’s great to play with Tribey again, and to play on the same team as guys like Comps, Ozzy and Matty that I knew before signing. I played with Rich Facey for a brief period in Bracknell before he came down to the island and used to play against Corey as a junior (we used to slash each other a fair bit) but all the guys are great and it’s one of the best rooms I have been apart of!

  You grew up in the Bracknell system and appeared at most levels there and last year you iced for Slough Jets. What brought you to the island?

I played in every Bracknell team from under 10’s right up to the Bees and enjoyed playing for my local team. I felt I needed a change and moved to Slough last season, things didn’t work out for one reason or another and I got the chance to play a big role on the island. Scoring and contributing on the board is something I enjoy the most and when I got the chance to come down and do that on a team that has the ability to win silverware it was a move in the right direction for me. I have struggled with ice time and confidence for the past few seasons and have not played to the level I know I am capable of, but this season it all seems to have clicked and I am enjoying my hockey again!

  For those who haven’t seen you on the ice, how would you describe your playing style?

The answer to this depends who you speak to. I like to think that I am quite a well rounded player that can contribute defensively and offensively, however if you speak to some of my old team mates I’m not sure they would agree with the defensive part. But it’s something I am always trying to work on.

  Other than the Raiders, do you follow any other teams? Who are your favourite players and biggest influences?

In the NHL I follow Boston as I have been there a few times and seen a few games. I always keep an eye on Washington too as Alexander Ovechkin is one of my favourite players. There are a lot of players I like to watch in the NHL that have unbelievable skill and ability, but that’s why they play in that league. Although I’m not sure how the between the legs goal would have gone down in our league...

I like to keep an eye on my old teams and where my old team mates are now playing. It’s good to see how they get on as I have made good friends that play in the EPL and NIHL along the way. And just because he is bugging me for a mention, I always look for the Bison score to see how Aaron Connolly got on. He is my number 1 fan.

I have quite a few people that have influenced me and learnt a lot from several different people. But I suppose I wouldn’t be where I am without my parents driving me up and down the country and paying for fees!

  The Raiders are taking on Invicta in back to back games this weekend, how do you see that going down? Any players you’ll be keeping an eye on??

I think it will be a tough weekend. I know that all of us are looking forward to the games and that they are the games we all love to play in. I think they will be close, but hopefully we can come out on top.

Chelmsford Chieftains @Wightlink Raiders, NIHL1 South

Chieftains 4 – 4 Raiders

Speaking to a few of the Raiders team prior to the match there was a real sense of unity as they headed into the game and it showed on the ice too, the team playing much better as a unit than they had in previous outings. Matt Colclough was phenomenal in the goal, standing in the way of everything that came at him and at the other end of the ice the team were calm and decisive. Jeremy Cornish opened the scoring just 3 minutes into the game with an opportune power play goal assisted by Richard Facey and the momentum was firmly in the Raiders favour throughout the period. Even when Niall Bound received 2 minutes for cross-checking the team didn’t flag, Alex Barker popping up with an unassisted short-handed goal and the Wightlink team rode out the period with bags of confidence.

Owing to the fact that the visitors changing room is next door to the gents toilets I was privy to a snippet of the Chieftains team talk between periods (well, more accurately I was privy to someone repeatedly shouting “Fuck”, but you get the picture). Whatever other words were said it clearly worked as the Chieftains came out with renewed vigour for the second period. Daniel Volrab took advantage of a lucky bounce to bring his team back into the game and the Chieftains looked to have found their groove. 23 minutes (and 44 seconds) in Craig Tribe took a minor penalty for a face-off violation (though I couldn’t for the life of me say what violation that might be) and Chelmsford piled on the pressure, though the Raiders PK units stayed tough (and once again Yousif Abu Saada was immence, throwing himself about the ice, we were pleased to see him rewarded with a decent amount of power play time too, puts paid to all the folks who were puzzled by his signing).  Alex Barker popped up again midway through the period, scoring a well worked goal with assists from Tribe and Matt Vizzari. Unfortunately the final 5 minutes of the period would see the a flurry of minor penalties and Chelmsford stepped up to the mark, James Ayling taking advantage to score two in a little under a minute, allowing Chelmsford to ride out the last few seconds on the clock knowing they’d brought themselves level. Additionally, Vizzari took a scary looking puck to the face midway through the period, though thankfully he managed to get back out there after being patched up.

A minute or so into final 20 and the Chieftains took the lead, Ross Brears stepping up to slot away the puck after he had assisted on both Ayling’s goals. The rest of the period was evenly matched, both teams taking minor penalties and getting away with all manner of minor discretions that weren’t called. With less than two minutes on the clock that man Barker popped up again and combined with Abu Saada and Tribe to slot away the puck and complete his hat-trick with another short-handed effort. As the last seconds ticked away both teams threw everything they had at the puck, but the buzzer sounded on a thrilling draw!

The Highs

Matt Colclough is back to his best, standing on his head to deny all manner of shots and inspiring huge confidence in his teammates.

The absence of Nathan Taylor with a shoulder injury has allowed another player to take advantage. Richard Nembhard slotted in well on the third line, using his size to his advantage. This youngster has bags of enthusiasm and his stride gives him a huge burst of acceleration from a standing start that will undoubtedly result in opportunities on the break.

Young defenceman Simon Hobbis played a good game once again. Despite his size he won’t be bullied by the opposition and he’s really building an understanding with Damon Larter that will be dangerous (for the opposition) as Hobbis’ passing abaility and Larter’s slapshot will add some points!

The Lows

Despite a much improved performance defensively, the team still seem to suffer from lapses in concentration.

A combination of absences and injuries has caused a bit of line shuffling already, with Niall Bound partnering Dan Pye last night and Nembhard joining the third line.

The Opposition

Chelmsford are the benchmark for the league. In discussion with Raiders Team Manager Geoff Underwood we both agreed that you can’t hate the team because you just have too much respect for them.

Ryan Bainborough gives them so many extra chances as he makes some superb saves and is up there with the best goalies in the league from what we've seen of him (for our money Colclough and Chico Cole from Gosport are the others in the top three).

Tibor Schneider is dominant in defence, a big body who is tough to move while Julian Smith provides a lot of consistency and his cheeky grin after a questionable hit always gets the fans worked up!

Despite being short-benched (and especially missing the hugely impressive Luke Brittle) the Chieftains once again showed why they are the team to beat this year.

Final Thoughts

In a game with a wealth of missed calls I’m not going to blame the referees, Thrower and Wheeler are both young officials and their ability to run the game won’t have been helped by pointless heckling from the stands, that said if I had my way I’d team each of them with a more experienced official to allow them to build confidence and grow, we need all the refs and linesmen we can get in the game and we don’t want to scare off young officials!

Ricky Attrill made his debut for the Raiders and didn’t look out of place in a couple of shifts. He’ll grow as time goes on and my old mucker Chris Randall reckons he’ll be an asset on the penalty kill.

Alex Trendall has been brought up from the Juniors and will hopefully see some ice time in coming games, there’s a good feeling about this young talent.

An Interview With Yousif Abu Saada

  You were awarded Man of the Match last night (and we agree with the choice), you seemed to put yourself in front of every puck, how’re you feeling today?

  Yep there's no denying I'm feeling a little sore in places but nothing major! To be honest, up to now the only time I've ever had a serious injury blocking a shot was on one occasion years ago that I actually tried to get out of the way of the puck!

  Last night’s game wasn’t the prettiest the Raiders will play this year, especially in the first two periods. What would you say was the turning point that led to the victory?

  You're right it wasn't a pretty game and we didn't perform anywhere near as well as we know we can. Throughout the season you're going to have games like that, no team in any league in any sport plays to their full potential every single game, but it's about finding a way to win those games. We have an awful lot of character in this team, and it's these battling wins that will ensure we'll be in the hunt for the league title right til the very end.

  For me the turning point was simplifying our game and playing more effectively as a unit in the third period. To a certain extent I think the way our forwards ripped through Streatham's D in the last game lead to us over complicating things in the first two periods of the Cardiff game; once we got back to what we're good at the Cardiff D really struggled to contain us.

  You’ve formed a really solid shutdown pairing on defence with Ben Lock; you seem to bring out the best in each other, why do you think that is?

  I'm really enjoying sharing the blue line with Lockey so far, he's still young but has a mature approach to the game and always listens/wants to learn. I'm really hoping I can pass on some often become fan favourites but never quite get the plaudits  of my experience this year and help him develop his game further.

  I think we work pretty well as a shutdown pair because we both tend to play a very simple game; block shots, clear the net and move the puck up to let the forwards go to work. I think it's fair to say that neither of us are majorly offensively minded so it allows us to concentrate on taking care of our own end.

  You were on the Raiders line-up a few years ago during their time in the EPL, what made you choose to come back this year?

  To be honest it came out of nowhere; having played in NIHL2 for Swindon last year I had almost fell out of love with the game and was seriously considering quitting the sport. I eventually decided to play another year in Swindon, but when Ozzy mentioned that Jeremy was looking for another D I just couldn't turn it down! For sure it's meant a bit more travel time etc, but the chance to play in NIHL1 again for a team that has a serious shot at silverware was an opportunity I had to take and right now I'm loving playing more than I have in years!

  How did you first get into hockey? You came up through the system at Swindon, was there anyone there who was a particular influence on you?

  A friend of mine had his 7th birthday party on a public skating session; I really enjoyed it so I started going every week. After a while I met some of the under 10's team and decided to give it a go! My first memory of the learn to play sessions are of being coached by Swindon Wildcats legend Daryl Lipsey, as a young fan of the team it didn't get any better than that!!

  There were a number of great coaches in the Swindon set up, none more so than Mark Beggs who coached me from under 12's right through to under 19's. In terms of my senior career I'd have to say Ken Forshee and Gareth Endicott were big influences; they both gave me a shot and believed in me at all times.

  Are there any players you’ve lined up with in the past that you’d love to play alongside again? If so, who and why?

  This is a horrible question as there's been so many over the years! I'd love to play alongside Mark Richardson, John Dewar and Shane Moore again simply because of all the great times we shared as Juniors at Swindon. A line of me and Andrew Shurmer on D, Joel Petkoff, Gareth Endicott and Ken Forshee as forwards would also be great!

  Anything else you’d like to add Yousif?

  Just that I've got a really good feeling about our team this year; it should be an exciting season on the Island!
