"Mwana, taking her marks for the daily sprint to the milk bottles. Ironically, she has no place in this race!
Unlike the rest of the Umani herd, Mwana is not an orphan. (She is the wild-born baby of Murera, matriarch of the Umani orphan herd.) However, this confident little girl loves a good competition — and hates to be left out. So, when the milk-dependent orphans run for their afternoon bottles, she duly joins the race. Her strategy is a bit off, as her mother always arrives last. While the orphans enjoy their milk bottles, Mwana must wait for Murera to nurse!
A funny anecdote from one of these races:
As usual, the precocious little elephant sprinted alongside her bigger friends — but much to everyone’s surprise, she took the lead and reached the bottle line before everyone else. Mwana tried to pull up a bottle, perhaps believing she deserved a trophy, but found it too heavy for her tiny trunk. No one offered to help her; bottle feeding is a serious business, and as much as everyone loves Mwana, they are not about to give up their milk. Instead, she rightfully had to wait to nurse from her mother."
