6/9/25 Wild Draw of the Day: Peatland Rewetting (from Daybreak, published by CMYK).

In the game Daybreak, you cooperate with other players to try to halt Climate Change. This card in particular refers to the practice of restoring natural wetland habitats.

Peatlands help filter and clean water, prevent flooding, and provide a home to endagered wild species. They store twice as much carbon as all the forests on earth, despite being 3-4% of the global surface area. Yet construction and agricultural projects can disrupt these lands and their benefits.

Reading:

It is easy to overlook a soggy swamp as something that must be cleaned and tidied. Yet these very areas are Mother Earth's own water filters and home to abundant life. Seek out the majesty in life's mess. Notice what's already inside you and nourish it before jumping to consumption.

6/13/25 WildDraw of the Day: GoGurt (from Cards Against Humanity)

Surprisingly tame given the possible draws from this deck, though I see how this card have devastating effectiveness in the hands of a savvy player.

Reading

Even where grim cynicism is expected, a dose of childlike wonder and curiosity can do you good. Our inner child invites spontaneity, hope, and gentleness into our lives, and we would do well to listen to them. They do not need to make all our decisions, but they should at least be heard.

6/11/2025 Wild Draw of the Day: Italian Macerated Strawberries

Trying something a little different today for our wild draw. Instead of using cards, we're using a random recipe. Let's see what we can learn from this fruity little guy (you're welcome for your new gender descriptor).

This recipe has two steps: Combine the ingredients and let chill (three steps if you grate chocolate on for a garnish, which you should). And sometimes it really is that simple. Combine tart and sweet (such as an amount of sugar that would be irresponsible on a daily basis), and there it is.

Side note: grated chocolate as a garnish is essentially fancy sprinkles. And I think sprinkles are the epitome of things adults have no appreciation for despite how much happier they would be with them in their lives. Slow down, have some sprinkles, and enjoy the simple pleasure of unnecessary fun.

Reading: Life may give you both sweet and sour at times. This isn't necessarily bad. They keep you balanced and provide a mature experience full of complexity to appreciate. Add a dash of spontaneity to the mix when you can. Life comes in seasons, and this is a time that may feel raw but fresh.

6/10/25 Wild Draw of the Day: Single Solid Purple Oval (from Set)

Going back to a more abstract card for this one. Set cards are either purple, green, or red with 1, 2, or 3 shapes featuring either solid, hashed, or empty infills. As such, it doesn't fit nicely into a four suit interpretation.

Yet threes are common in spirituality, though its meaning varies from practice to practice. Being a retired mathematician I associate it with the stability of triangles. Being a novice witch I connect it to harmony and balance. Being a runner, I also know it's the hardest mile before it gets easier.

But back to the single solid purple oval. One naturally symbolizes beginnings but also isolation. Solid implies an inner core of determination. Purple is a secondary color of red and blue, down at the bottom of the rainbow and just before ultraviolet on the EM spectrum. Oval comes from "ovum" (egg).

As such, I'm less tempted to view this card as an Ace and more as The Fool. A traveler at the beginning of their journey filled with red hot ambition and cool blue determination. They are freshly hatched and excited to see what's out there, to the detriment of reason and caution.

Reading:

You are filled with drive towards a new opportunity. Congratulations! Your passion and tenacity are a powerful match for breaking out of your shell. Much still lies ahead, though, and I encourage patience in equal measure to form a stable trinity.

6/8/2025 Wild Draw of the Day: Bearded Reedling (from Wingspan).

Today we take to the skies with what was originally and now colloquially called the "Bearded Tit." As experienced ornithologists will point out, though, it is not a tit, and its markings more resemble a moustache than a beard.

While you may famously associate monogamous birds with penguins, the bearded reedling also mates for life (some level of infidelity notwithstanding). And mate they do, as even the flavor text of this card points out. They can brood as many as four times a year. Probably why this card produces eggs.

Reading:

The Bearded Reedling has multiple identities, some of which can be deceiving. As such, patiently seek out the sincere heart within a person before judging them. If you can, you may find your relationship lasting and fruitful.

6/7/25 Wild Draw of the Day: Pain Seer (from Magic the Gathering)

I admit I don't know the most about MtG, but Pain Seer certainly feels viscerally ominous as a title. An uneasy feeling reinforced by the cryptic flavor text: "Every twitching nerve and pulsing vein carries a message, discernible with the right tools." The right tools, I imagine, being those of a wizard who reads the messages told by the squirming and writhing of pain.

Reading

The Pain Seer finds meaning in the pulses of pain. After all, hurt is meant as a white-hot message to the body: STOP. Yet this wizard goes deeper than the immediate shock to the system, soaking in the footnotes and notes in the margins. This is difficult to see while in the middle of the experience, but there is a lot to learn from pain. Know when it is best to tense and pull back from injury, certainly, but also learn when and where to relax into the excruciating and all it has to say.

6/6/25 Wild Draw of the Day: Attack of the Dead (from Exploding Kittens: Zombie Kittens)

As the card says, playing it allows you to burn bread to summon a toast ghost. This ghost then allows you to force the next player to take three turns for each dead player. 

Mistakes can be costly. They can bring the ghosts of previous experiences into the present, and they might haunt more than just you. But not all spirits are bad. 

Reading:

We carry with us the spirit of all we have been in the past, healthy and unhealthy. We can recruit the aid of those that still serve us and even support those that don't until they are able to help. And with that help you will be able to seize the advantage against what opposes you.
