Solanum dulcamara (European Bittersweet, Climbing Nightshade)
Bittersweet is a member of the genus Solanum, as are tomatoes, potatoes and the eggplant. Indeed, if you painted a Bittersweet flower yellow, it would look just like the cherry tomato in my garden. Unfortunately, the little red berries are poisonous to most mammals, including people. Bittersweet grows in an amazing variety of ecosystems and here’s one doing quite well a mere twenty feet from the Pacific Ocean. My local bumblebees pollinate it and my local birds (and many introduced European bird species) eat the little red berries and disperse the seeds.
Bittersweet has been used in herbal medicine since ancient times but these days, Bittersweet has been replaced by much safer medications. As a herbal medicine it was brought to North America in the 1700′s and rapidly invaded most of the continent. It is said that in the Middle Ages it was viewed as protection from witchcraft and it was beleived that garlands of it would ward off the ‘Evil Eye’. Gee, with no Covid-19 vaccine yet available, I might have to give that a try.
