I'm fresh off the plane from LA where Madi and I went down to race in the Wildflower Tri. I wasn't sure I was going to race in the Olympic race, after a tough few weeks of work and long term planning. Needless to say I brought my road bike with to participate in this amazing race.
They grass-roots feeling of the wildflower triathlon is something that is rarely seen and can only be experienced firsthand. This year featured a little extra flavour, when the swim was moved to a different location (after San Antonio lake had disappeared with the drought in California) so a 3.4 km transition run was added in.
The experience was awesome. We watched the Long course race on Saturday and saw Jessie win his fourth title while Heather Jackson took her third. There were some friends from Todd Malcolm's "No Limits Tri Club" and Jill and Chris's "triathlete within" team.
Saturday I raced the Olympic Tri and had a blast. I wanted to get in and race and see what my fitness is like and where I need to improve. My swim was fine. I think I had the fastest men's swim and rode to a solid bike split (despite the lack of anything remotely aero), being the first one off the bike. After that the hurt began and I lost my legs on the run. The hills on the course are of legendary proportions (at least when your are my size) and I had a couple guys get by me on the run. All in all I was alright with the 6th place overall finish, and left with some great excitement and focus for my race season to begin come June.
I cam back to Calgary earlier today-exactly the way I wanted to- hungry to prepare for a successful race season! I am just in the process of working out some great partnerships that will work to make late 2014 and 2015 my best race season get! Onward and upward!
