Ryan and Sophie only know each other through mutual friends.
Ryan knows she doesn’t have a chance.
Sophie’s engaged to someone else.
So, what brings them together?
So i’ve been wondering whether Ryan would want to keep the surname Wilder, considering it’s a complete fabrication from the woman trying to pretend she didn’t exist.
Idk maybe it’s something in the back of her mind that she doesn’t allow herself to consider too much until she’s about to propose to Sophie?
Maybe when they wake the morning after the proposal, Sophie says something like “good morning future Mrs. Wilder-Moore” and notices a slight movement she would have missed if she’d blinked, but Ryan definitely had a reaction to that. So she jokingly follows up with “Moore-Wilder would grate my ears for the rest of our lives. It just sounds like we don’t read well, darling.”
“Nerd. But no it’s not that… I guess i just started thinking about it for real and Wilder is an entire lie. I don’t want our name and our child’s name to be forever tied to a falsehood, you know?”
Sophie nods. “Well, you know what you don’t want, but do you know what you want?”
Ryan sighs “not really” then shrugs “we could just go with Moore”.
“Yeah that would work”
And of course Ryan hears the disappointment she tries to hide. “Tell me…”.
“I just… i don’t know.. i guess i … want… everyone to know i’m yours just as much as you’re mine… or…whatever. That’s probably outdated or stupid or whatever. Nevermind.”
Ryan grabs her face, pulls her in, and kisses her deeply. “God, i love you woman. It’s neither stupid nor ‘whatever’. It’s…everything.” She kisses her again.
Sophie has that I love you so much let’s just elope twinkle in her eye.
“We can’t. Jordan would kill us.”
Sophie agrees “If Luke and Mary didn’t kill us first… Ok. Well…options to mull over. You could use your birthright, Jada’s family name since Jet was Marquis’s dad or Fox for your father**. I would probably discuss that with Luke though. You could just choose a name that you think suits you and you’d want your wife and children to have as well”.
Ryan gives her brightest smile at Sophie extending their family to multiple kids. She dives on Sophie, rolling her over on the bed peppering her with kisses until she’s giggling.
“Babies. All the babies. And i’ll tell them all about Mama Cora and…” Ryan stops as realization dawns.
Sophie says it for her “Lewis. Our family will be Lewis-Moore”.
Ryan’s voice cracks “is that okay?”
Sophie wipes the tears. Ryan does the same for her. “Of course, baby. I’d be honored to carry that name.”

Valentine’s Day Part 2
As Ryan followed Sophie into her condo, she couldn’t help the butterflies that were madly fluttering their wings inside her stomach. She’d never been to Sophie’s place and went in the front door. It was always swooping onto the balcony to have middle of the night conversations. They always kept an invisible line, professional almost. She was on Bat duty, never a booty call. Ryan had been in Sophie’s place only one other time and that was to get Alice. But now it wasn’t lost on her that she was coming back to a woman’s house after dinner and that woman was Sophie. Usually in lesbian land, this meant she was about to get laid.
“You gonna stand there all night or you gonna come in, Wilder?” Sophie asked with the biggest smile on her face. She was already taking off her heels and putting Ryan’s desserts in the fridge. Ryan said nothing but she walked further into the condo.
“So…” Ryan finally said, feeling nervous and awkward. Sophie gave a breathy laugh.
“You good?” She asked, eyeing Ryan.
“Yep.” Ryan said making a loud popping noise with her voice on the “p”. “Are you good?” Ryan asked shooting the question back.
“Yes but I need to get out of this dress. I’m gonna change. I think I should have something for you to wear.” Sophie said walking off to her room.
“Ok, but please no ex-husband clothing.” Ryan called after Sophie. Sophie didn’t respond but Ryan knew Sophie probably rolled her eyes. While Sophie was gone, Ryan took the opportunity to let out a nervous breath and let her eyes wander the condo. Sophie had lots of photos of her and Jordan, some knick-knacks and not much else. It looked like a house designed from a pottery barn catalogue. Classic Soph. Ryan thought to herself.
“Alright here ya go. I have some old sweats that are pretty baggy on me, some leggings that may or may not fit and an old shirt of mine and a oversized crew neck. Your choice.” Sophie said holding out the clothes to show Ryan. Ryan took the sweats and the crew neck.
“The bathroom is over there but you can change in my room.” Sophie said going over to the couch and reaching for the remote. She sat down and flipped on her tv.
“Thanks Sophie. Be back.” Ryan said walking off to Sophie’s room. When she came back out in Sophie’s clothes and walked over to Sophie on the couch Sophie looked her up and down, then fixed her eyes on Ryan with a look of shock.
“What?” Ryan said holding her hands out to the sides of her with her palms up. She looked down at herself then back at Sophie.
“Nothing, you look very cute in my clothes, it’s just that I don’t think I’ve ever seen you this covered up before.” Sophie laughed. Ryan gave her a look which Sophie ignored and then patted the couch next to her. Ryan sat down.
“Well you don’t have many options in that grandma closet of yours apparently!” Ryan said half teasing.
“Yeah Jordan pretty much said the same thing.” Sophie giggled.
“But you sure looked good tonight though. I mean you always look good but that white dress… whew.” Ryan said. Sophie smiled.
“Me, what about you! You and these sexy ass zipper dresses and hey I’m not complaining at all, but Jordan once again was correct, Ryan Wilder is hot as hell.” Sophie said recalling the conversation her and Jordan had about Ryan at the 30 under 30 event.
“Jordan, when was she talking about me? And do y’all talk about me often?” Ryan said, her interest piqued. Sophie rolled her eyes.
“I think Jordan’s crushing on you, she is always bringing you up.” Sophie said, making an exaggeration of rolling her eyes; her voice making it clear she was joking.
“Humm are you sure she’s the Moore sister that’s crushing?” Ryan asked, her tone turning flirty, daring Sophie to deny it. Sophie cleared her throat and laughed.
“Moving on… Jordan has been trying to get us together since she met you. I told her at The Hold Up it was never gonna happen.” Sophie said waving it off, her tone feigning nonchalance. She wanted to see where Ryan would take this.
“What! Excuse me? What’s wrong with me! I’m Batwoman first of all. Second of all I’m a catch.” Ryan said sitting up and defending herself.
“That you are my dear, that you are.” Sophie said amused.
“Ok so you lied and told Jordan it wasn’t gonna happen, then what.” Ryan said, both of them laughing now at their goofiness.
“Then I had a dream about you.” Sophie said as if it was the most non-interesting thing in the world. “Anyways, I need something sweet, can we break into that dessert of yours? I’ll pour wine.” Sophie said getting up to go to the kitchen. But before she could really get up Ryan pulled her back by the arm.
“Woah woah, wait a minute woman! You had a dream about who?” Ryan said getting a smug look on her face. Sophie rolled her eyes.
wildmoore fic: "a thick line between love and hate"
summary: It takes longer than Sophie would ever admit to build up the nerve to add, “You’ve only said like two words since we left the park, and Luke’s pissed off at us for acting weird around him, so whatever this is, I’m pretty sure kissing you made it worse.” It’s been miles of this deflection and awkwardness, and Sophie’s been sent a million and one hints. It’s about time she takes them for what they are. A flat-out rejection.
She kissed Ryan.
She kissed Ryan Wilder.
She kissed Ryan Wilder, in the middle of her panic attack.
She kissed Ryan Wilder, in the middle of the woods, in the middle of a mission, while Ryan was still in her Batwoman suit, and there’s nothing she can do to take it back.
Sophie’s not even sure she’d want to take it back if she could.
(Does she?)
She side-eyes the subject of her scrambled thoughts now, but Ryan’s looking straight ahead, eyes vigilant as she watches the road in front of them. Sophie sighs as she does the same, refocusing her eyes forward as this dark, spiraling road leads them back to the inner city of Gotham.
It’s been almost twenty minutes now, and no one has uttered a word since they left the park. Luke could be fast asleep back there for all Sophie knows, and Ryan…
(Well, it’d be like pulling teeth trying to get anything out of that one.)
Sophie sighs again.
“Okay, what’s going on?”
Sophie startles at the sound of Luke’s voice from behind her. “Jesus, Luke,” she breathes, clutching at her chest, “I thought you were sleeping.”
“I bet you did,” he says, and Sophie crunches up her nose, unsure of what that’s supposed to mean.
Ok but an au where the heroes involved in Armageddon remember what happened.
Ryan wakes up in Gotham when Barry resets the timeline. She heads to their new headquarters (some hidden nook of Gotham she knew about that Luke fortified) and can’t stop thinking about how right it feels. Of course she recognized she had…no, clearly very much has…feelings for Sophie but hadn’t allowed herself to consider how deep they were, well with everything going on. But marriage and kids?
They had a history to overcome and they came from completely different, and often contentious, Black political paradigms, or so she thought. And that fling with Renee, hurt. But that feeling she got every time she spoke of Sophie in that other reality…it didn’t feel entirely new. It felt like the crescendo of the whispers in her heart now that she’s taking the time to listen. Was Sophie her forever home? She feels her stare and looks up.
Sophie sees Ryan working through something, being more introspective than usual, and she can’t help but wonder what’s going through that gorgeous head that’s going to keep her at a distance. Sophie knew she fucked up, ok. Renee was maybe the worst person, other than Alice, to sleep with when it came to this thing with her and Ryan. Hell, Alice may have been more forgivable if for no other reason than the loss of Kate and the proximity or something? Whatever. The point is Renee was a bad decision she’s paying for, missing almosts and craving promise. She sighs. Just then, Ryan looks up and catches her eyes instantly. There’s a hint of something different about her that Sophie can’t place.
The next several weeks feel strange to Sophie. Ryan feels guarded to some extent, but not as much as she anticipated. The banter comes back, but they don’t openly flirt anymore. They still watch each other though, almost constantly. The gazes aren’t heated with want as much but still make her feel exposed in a way that she only feels comfortable with Ryan. They’re touching each other again, but it’s not about comfort or protection; it feels more like they are each other’s totems, the gravity from their fingertips anchoring them in this reality. In general, Ryan is quieter but not muted, just more…deliberate. And Sophie doesn’t know what to make of it, still isn’t clear on what Ryan wants. And when she finally gets the nerve she asks…
They’re in the batmobile returning from a mission and listening to Asiahn when she feels Sophie watching with something bubbling underneath. She pulls over, turns off the comms, and gives her a second. “Ryan, what do you want…from me?” Ryan gives her a small smile “hm. You’re my wife, you know. (Catching wide eyes) I’m not proposing. I’m just telling you. In an alternate reality, we were married and about to expand our family. I was there. And I remember how you felt. And being back here in this reality, I don’t know the future here, but…you feel the same…like that could be us. And…i’m tired of things just happening to me. I definitely don’t want fate in charge of this. So…i’m being more intentional with you. All I want from you is you, Soph.”
But like fleshed out or whathaveyou
Ok but imagine Ryan making arrangements to get Sophie and her family out of Gotham without telling her. Because 1) she loves the hell out of this woman , 2) she cannot stand the thought of being the reason Jordan loses her, and 3) she never wants Sophie to know the pain of losing everyone she loves forever, especially because of her.
So she tells Luke she can’t function properly until he helps her get them out. Sophie gets some job opportunity she can’t refuse, law enforcement on the right side of things led by a Black man in Star City. ARGUS.
Jordan gets placed with a growing media empire led by a Black woman in Central City, one Iris West-Allen. And her homophobic parents (or just mother, idk i skipped the Ruby Rose season) are convinced to leave town using some fear toxin and a convincing Poison Mary act. They’re tracked to Prince George’s County in Maryland because of course.
Sophie’s not an idiot. She notices her entire family is getting pulled out of Gotham. Suddenly. Out of the blue. Like this is the end of a sitcom or something. Like someone’s putting a pretty bow on their favorite characters, The Moores. She isn’t sure who would want them out of the city so badly and who would have the muscle to pull this off, at first. But when she goes to tell Ryan about this unbelievable job opp, she doesn’t seem even a little surprised to hear about it. In fact, Ryan immediately moves to “so you’re going to take it right? You should. It would be amazing for you. And you’d really get to be a shining example for little Black girls like you wanted”. She was talking in this weird, practiced voice and looked at her maybe once to give this smile that felt… strange. And Sophie’s stomach dropped or heart cracked or… she doesn’t know. She just feels gutted. “You wanted me gone?”
“Soph…”
“No. Save it. You got your wish.”
She leaves hurriedly, refusing to let Ryan see a single tear drop and missing the sobs rack Ryan’s tiny frame in the process.
////// 🦇
She calls and texts with Mary and Luke, avoiding asking about the bat team directly, but it’s 6 months before Sophie has any contact with Ryan again. She’s back in her apartment after a hard workout and there’s a letter in her mail. An honest to God written piece of mail with a stamp on it. There’s no return address, just Please Read in Ryan’s handwriting. She drops the letter like it burned her.
Pacing her condo, thinking aloud “I really don’t need this right now. I just started seeing this girl and it’s nice and easy (and she doesn’t push you to be better). This job is actually awesome (the one she helped you get). I have my own purpose and get a decent amount of sleep with no dangerous serial killer in my house (yeah, sleep that you use to dream about her). Ok SHUT IT INTRUSIVE THOUGHTS!”
When she calls one of her confidants to discuss it, a tech genius named Curtis who used to work at ARGUS then took a job in DC but has since returned to his roots, he asks if perhaps she’s interpreting their last discussion incorrectly.
“You say she orchestrated this whole thing to get your entire family out of Gotham and it was probably to protect you…”
“Yeah, but she didn’t communicate with me about any of it at all. She never does. I just…never know where i stand with her and that’s the problem.”
Curtis thinks “how do you not understand what you mean to her at this point?”, but says “I think you should read the letter. It can’t hurt you any worse than you’ve already felt?”
“Yeahhh i don’t know about that.”
The letter sits on her coffee table for 2 days, mocking her. On the 3rd day, she takes two shots, says “fuck it”, and rips it open.
My Dearest Soph,
First, I want to thank you for opening this because I know you weren’t sure if you should. I knew my actions would hurt you and I only hope you will forgive me someday. I got your address from Jordan, who said she’d only give it if I told you the whole truth. So here it goes.
Sophie, I am in love with you irrevocably but never irresponsibly. I’ve known it for some time and thought we would be something special, something unstoppable. But then my brother…you know what he’s capable of and you know he’s nowhere near our biggest threat. He had plans for you just to get to me. So you see… i had no choice in this either. And because i love you as though it were written in my DNA, it meant your family was also my responsibility because i never want you to feel any more hurt than is absolutely necessary. So I got them out of here too. Away from me and anyone who would use them as your proxy.
I should have communicated with you, but you wouldn’t have listened, Sophie. You would have fought me on it. You would have insisted on staying, but I needed you safe and that meant keeping you out of crosshairs intended for me. It meant sending you away and knowing your your comfort, your support, your smile, your touch… God, I miss your touch so much… it meant it all would no longer be in my reach. It meant knowing that I’d have to miss you and learn to live with this tension that only being with you unfurls. But that’s my burden to bear.
I just…miss you more than i thought possible Soph. and I love you more than I can explain.
I hope this finds you well and one day we can be friends again.
Forever yours,
Ryan
If she were able to think anything but Ryan is in love with me. Ryan’s been in love me. Ryan. Me. Love. Of the Gay kind, she’d probably be tired of women in bat suits confessing through letters when they’re out of her life. But as it is, all she can do is laugh at how much of a mess she is as she tries to use her laptop to book a flight to Little Miss Written In My DNA.
And then, of course, she calls Jordan who answers “Hey Miss Not Even an Enemies to Lovers Maybe!”
///// 🦇
As she touches down in Gotham, she texts Mary to get Ryan’s whereabouts. When she arrives at their apartment, Ryan answers the door. At the look of shock, Sophie only says “yep”. She invites herself in and as Mary makes her way out of the apartment chuckling, Ryan finds her voice “Mary, why you leaving? Where you going Mar—” .
Ryan stares at the closed door and takes a deep breath, the sound accompanied by only the thunderous beating of her heart. She slowly looks over to the love of her life.
Sophie takes in the sheepish look, shakes her head and unfolds her arms. “You are so dramatic.”
Ok but they’re at The Hold Up and Ryan makes a flimsy excuse about BAC for why Sophie should go upstairs and sleep instead of going back to her place. Sophie scrunches her brow “ummm what are you talking about? I’m good. You know I know my limits”. Ryan just drops it and moves to another side of the bar to serve some patron.
Sophie’s nursing her last drink all like what the hell was that about? And isn’t Mary’s cousin here? Where exactly would i even sl— And then she gets it. Damnit
She slowly makes her way over to Ryan, giving her time to finish with the customers, and then leans over the bar “Ryyyan?”
“I said it’s fine”
“Al (for Ryan Althea Wilder - yes, i made up a middle name in honor of Althea Gibson)… please look at me”
She does. But with attitude because she’s a puddle for Sophie and she must resist for her own pride.
“Of course i’ll spend the night with you.”
