In the high-desert wilds of the Southwestern United States, a small and isolated population of rare Mexican gray wolves is struggling to thrive.

Previously, government reintroduction efforts had attempted to boost wolf numbers by releasing captive-bred adult wolves onto the landscape. Sadly, this often resulted in tragedy, and population numbers remained stagnant.

But just a few years ago, biologists tried something bold: They selected tiny pups from captive litters, their eyes not yet open, and packed them deep into the wild recovery zone in backpacks. They placed the pups directly into the dens of wild wolf parents. It is scientific fact that wild wolves love all pups, and they raise these foster babies with the same attentiveness and nurturing as they give their own.

Today the Mexican gray wolf population is gaining in leaps and bounds, thanks to the unconditional love of wild wolf mothers.
