👀 this move by Will Bynum in the Big 3!!!
In a shocking turn of events, former NBA players Glen Davis and William Bynum have been convicted for their involvement in defrauding the NBA Players' Health and Benefit Welfare Plan. The U.S. attorney in the Southern District of New York announced that Davis and Bynum were found guilty of conspiracy charges, having made false claims for dental and medical procedures that never took place. This case, which came to light in October 2021, revealed a widespread fraudulent scheme involving more than 20 defendants, including well-known NBA stars.
According to U.S. Attorney Damian Williams, while some of the defendants were once revered NBA player, their actions were nothing short of a typical fraudulent scheme aimed at deceiving the NBA's health care plan. The motive behind this elaborate plan was to amass over $5 million in illicit profits.
Prosecutors disclosed that these former basketball stars collectively stole $2.5 million through fabricated medical and dental claims. Astonishingly, they submitted false invoices totaling $4 million for chiropractic and dental services that were never provided or rendered.
Terrence Williams emerged as the mastermind orchestrating this deceitful operation. In August 2023, he was sentenced to a decade-long prison term for his central role in this fraudulent scheme. Williams enticed other ex-NBA players into participating by offering them counterfeit invoices to submit for reimbursement from the health care plan. As part of the arrangement, these players would then pay Williams a kick back from their ill-gotten gains.
Glen Davis enjoyed an eight season career in the NBA before his involvement in this scandal tarnished his reputation. Notably, he played an instrumental role on the Boston Celtics team that clinched an NBA championship back in 2008. Davis's last NBA season was with the LA Clippers in 2014-15.
William Bynum on the other hand, concluded his NBA career during the 2014-15 season with the Washington Wizards. While his time in professional basketball may have come to an end, his association with this fraudulent scheme has cast a shadow over his past achievements.
The conviction of Glen Davis and William Bynum serves as a stark reminder that even those who have achieved great success can succumb to temptation and engage in illegal activities. This case highlights the importance of maintaining integrity within professional sports and emphasizes the need for stringent measures to prevent such fraudulent schemes from occurring again. The NBA Players' Health and Benefit Welfare Plan will undoubtedly take steps to strengthen its security protocols moving forward, ensuring that players' trust is not misplaced.
