Party Battleship, “Ooh Wah” (2022)

I know I talked up Party Battleship a couple times in years past before they came out with their first album. But the dual lead promise hasn’t worked so well on their first two albums.

In short, only Shalini’s songs are keepers in my view, which means the first two albums can work nicely as a pair of sharp EPs. On the latest one, her songs mostly also happen to feature Will Rigby as fortune would have it.

Will Rigby, Sidekick Phenomenon (1985)

Mr Rigby’s on something of a tear, with two new (rap?) singles - both with YouTube videos - and the long-awaited digital debut of his first album, Sidekick Phenomenon. 

Will has left three songs off this Bandcamp release however, “because they're not very good.” I take some issue with that assessment, particularly about the original album closer “Let Me Show You How I Can Do,“ which also marked the recording debut of his then-wife Amy (McMahon) Rigby.

Will Rigby has a set routine before he prepares for a trip. “I’ve seen enough of the great cathedrals of the world,” said the dB’s drummer, who is based out of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. “They’re impressive, but all the same. [I check for] museums and other attractions, see if any band I want to see is playing where I’m going [and] places to eat.”

Their recently re-released debut album “Stands for Decibels” will be followed by a multi-format reissue of their second record “Repercussion” this fall, followed by a tour. Rigby, who said he is “quite allergic to social media,” occasionally visits Bluesky (username: @bringbialys). This interview has been edited for clarity and length.

Will Rigby, “Tail Of A Star” (1985)

Will’s new single got me digging into the crate for Sidekick Phenomenon, his debut, which has left relatively few digital traces on the net (and which I admit I didn’t play all that often before all that either). 

This is one of only two tracks I’ve managed to find digitized over the years, and it’s one of the better originals. Here he’s backed by Peter Holsapple on vocals and several instruments. But no trace online of the lead-off track, my original favorite, Will’s cover of “Settin’ The Woods On Fire.”

The record also features what I reckon are the first recording credits for Amy (McMahon) Rigby, including the final charmer, “Let Me Show You How I Can Do,“ where she also has a songwriting co-credit. No mention of the record at least in the podcast version of Girl To City though.
