The whole world couldn’t stop talking about one thing today, and that one thing was Will Smith slapping the shit out of Chris Rock at the Oscars. Not since Rick James and Charlie Murphy have we seen a slap so vicious. What a scene! All over an in-poor-taste-but-seemingly-harmless joke about his wife’s hair loss. Now, certainly a joke about her sleeping with other men would warrant a slap upside the head, but not this. As a result of this momentary lapse of sanity from The Fresh Prince, Twitter has been on fire today. The memes were hysterical, the discourse was nauseating, and the takes were blistering. The pandemic is now well into it’s third year, the Russian invasion of Ukraine shows no signs of stopping, and our democracy continues to crumble. AND YET, none of these things could garner 1/100th of our attention the way a slapping match between two besuited movie stars could. THIS IS AMERICA!
