This print ad for the local Washington, DC variety show Afternoon appeared on May 2, 1955 in the Washington Post. The show, hosted by Mac McGarry and Willard Scott, featured regular appearances by the Muppets. In his memoir, Scott talks about working with Jim Henson and Jane Nebel (later Henson), and specifically mentions working with the characters Sam and Kermit. The show ran from March 1955 to May 1956 and was broadcast live; Jim and Jane were also doing Sam and Friends live at the same time.
This ad is the first documented use of the name "The Muppets" in print.
The Jim Henson Hour (1989)
Willard Herman Scott Jr. (March 7, 1934 – September 4, 2021) Weather presenter, radio and TV personality, actor, narrator, clown, comedian, and author, best known for his TV work on the Today show as weather reporter and as the creator and original portrayer of Ronald McDonald.
Scott made occasional guest appearances as neighbor "Mr. Poole" on The Hogan Family, where his character was married to Mrs. Poole, played by Edie McClurg. From 1959–62 Scott portrayed Bozo the Clown in the classic children's television program on NBC Washington, D.C. affiliate WRC-TV. Scott also hosted the NBC telecast of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade from 1987–97 when he was replaced by Matt Lauer the following year.
For several years in the 1980s, Scott donned a Santa Claus costume for the broadcast of the National Tree-Lighting Ceremony in Washington, D.C.
In 1990 and 1992, Scott also hosted the Pillsbury Bake-Off on CBS (although under contract with CBS' rival NBC). (Wikipedia)
This image is one taken of the very first actor portrayal of fast food mascot Ronald McDonald. Created in 1963, the clown was created and portrayed by actor Willard Scott pictured here. Scott is best known as the Today show weatherman.
Willard Scott, best known as a TV weather man has passed away. I don't have a TV now, but television has been a big part of my experience. We got our first TV when I was 4 or 5 years old. Willard Scott played the Bozo the Clown role for a Washington DC TV station. It was a variety show for children with a studio audience of children. I remember Bozo talked with a Black girl in the audience. It's such a small memory, but had an effect.
Perhaps the next year I saw news footage of police dogs and fire hoses turned on Black people in Birmingham, Alabama helped me to see the injustice of racism. To see it dimly--years later in 1967, the Supreme Court in Loving v. Virginia decided that laws banning interracial marriage violated 14th Amendment protections. I was surprised such laws existed!
Willard Scott, a Virginian, used his platform on TV to include Black people when exclusion was the norm. In a long career he did a lot of good, mostly championing ordinary people.
In these mean times Willard Scott is a reminder that kindness is ours to choose.
