i used to LOVE broadcast and everything about it, but the longer i study it the more i hate it
i'm studying to be a reporter which means i will get paid next to nothing for a job almost anyone can do with a couple months of training.
my job enforces societal status quos. my job is to report on the emotion of the steubenville rapists after their sentencing, to purposefully misgender chelsea manning so that my middle school-educated audience can understand what i'm talking about in less than ten seconds before they change channels, even if i end up working for a fairly liberal news source.
or, that's what my job used to be. now my job is to generate page views and revenue-generating clicks. every man i meet in my major is a casual misogynist (and usually a racist to boot) and every woman i meet wants to be erin andrews or giuliana rancic which i know sounds incredibly reductive but it is so, so widely true of my three years here.
meanwhile my second major is history with my eventual goal of teaching history to high schoolers (HA I HATE RESPECT AND MONEY) and i love every history class i've ever taken and in spite of everything am still so excited to teach and just get there and start doing it.
not to mention that i could likely make more money teaching outright instead of working for literal pennies as a reporter
i wanted to do something before i taught because all my teachers who did something else first were far better teachers in general but i don't know how much more god damned communication student bullshit i can put up with
not to mention that for me to get a job in a communications field it's almost required that i get an unpaid internship in the field. journalism unpaid internships are a step above slavery, and they often times don't even pay you to relocate or live in a completely different big city with high cost of living.
but my history degree will be enough to get me a temporary teaching certificate.
i'm sorry this post is very long and very rambling and i'm just really upset and i have no idea what to do
