Ernest August, King of Hanover
Prince Ernest Augustus, Duke of Cumberland (1771–1851) was the fifth son of King George III. A staunch Tory in the House of Lords, he later became King of Hanover in 1837. Because Hanoverian law forbade female succession while a male heir lived, he inherited the crown, ending the personal union with the British throne, which then passed to his niece, Queen Victoria.
Ernest was born on 5 June 1771 at Buckingham House, London, the fifth son of King George III and Queen Charlotte. He was baptized on 1 July at St James's Palace.
