Not Without My Daughter

The book: Not Without my Daughter by Betty Mahmoody with William Hoffer.

Summary: Memoir. An American citizen and her daughter go on vacation with her husband to his native Iran, only to be held hostage in a country where they have no rights.

Found: On a list of banned books. (It's banned in--you guessed it--Iran.)

Picked it up because: It sounded fascinating. Plus, I love reading banned books.

Liked: It's hard to say I "liked" reading about this woman's horrible experiences, but it was an inspiring tale of motherly love and succeeding in the face of overwhelming odds. I was rooting for the author and her daughter the whole way. The ends she went to to keep herself and her daughter safe are astounding.

Ambivalent about: The presentation of Iran and Iranians in general. The author's extreme bias is understandable given her situation, but her black-and-white view of everything Iranian is still unsettling. I don't doubt the veracity of her story, but I am skeptical of the degree. I don't necessarily expect a nuanced world view in a memoir, but it sure would have been nice.

Conclusion: A gripping story that must be read with discerning, questioning, and culturally open mind.
