After screening at the Cannes Film Festival in May (where it was booed), Jack Nicholson’s directorial debut premiered in New York City on 13 June 1971.
Based on Jeremy Larner’s 1964 novel, Drive, He Said was adapted by Larner, Nicholson and (an uncredited) Terence Malick.
The film received mixed reviews, with most praising the performances (Karen Black, Bruce Dern, Henry Jaglom, William Tepper, and Robert Towne), and was a box office disappointment. Nicholson would not direct another film until Goin’ South (1978).
