Got an unexpected chance to see 12 years a slave.....Chiwetel Etjiofor and Lupita Nyongo were exceptional. I have rarely gone to a movie that was so hard to watch and transcendent at the same time. Bravo Steve McQueen! I knew B was in this and yet when his character entered it surprised me. I actually jumped in my seat a little. He was great as usual....accent, his bearing, the inner & outer conflict of the character visible on his face and.....everything else he excavates from the souls he inhabits through his art. I did not want to care about a slave owner. He pulled me in. I know we need to respect the work and just as we all want to grow, we want our favs to explore all kinds of work....tell different stories. This was challenging for me. I had an easier time walking into Julian Assange and letting go and journeying with that character. Of course, that is what art is about...giving us space to grow ourselves.
