âMr. Knox (so he introduced himself) epitomizes the anachronistic Virginian high class I told you about when describing Glew: Nothing about him belongs to this eraânot his car, not his hair, not his handshake, nor his accent (says Niamh). However, framed in the doorway of Axton House, he fit perfectly. Had he rung the doorbell of my old apartment, I would have mistaken him for a time traveler.â x âA house with supernatural enhancements, as I think Edith Wharton put it.â x âI never understood that penchant among treasure keepers and ancient civilizations of putting the golden idol on an altar in an empty room. It's like telling Indiana Jones, âHi, here's our most prized possession, ready for you to steal.â x âA.: Whatever; you must know how it works. An artifact containing...raw feelings, unprocessed sights and sounds and pains that the brain interpretsâis that too crazy? DR.BELKNAP: No. It has existed for thousands of years. It's called a book.â x Edgar Canteroâs first book in english, epistoletory (told in transcripts, letters, journal entries, video/audio recordings, and other documents) it tells the story of A who, after inheriting an old house from a long lost relative, sets out to find out the secrets of both it and the long lost relative. With lessons on ciphers and codes along the way, the revelations about the house, relative and his group of friends were Very interesing. Cantero did a really nice job of setting up the atmosphere of the old (almost ancient seeming) house, the cluttered dusty labyrinth A and his housemate Niamh can get lost in. And thereâs a hedge maze!! (the house, just the descriptions of it alone) reminded me of the houses in Ready or Not and Knives Out. The ending, which i wasnât expecting, reminded me of The Wicked and the Divine. I wana get all Canteroâs books.
