personality
Will McDonald has always felt like someone caught between two stories: the life he was given and the one he spent years imagining for himself. Will is tenderhearted. He is optimistic but guarded, like the centre of an ice cream bar. He enjoys slow afternoons, trying new foods, and meeting new people. He believes very deeply in social justice and helping others; he would give the shirt off of his back for a stranger. He wears his heart on his sleeve. Introverted by nature, Will prefers the comfort of libraries, music, and meaningful conversation over crowded rooms or attention, finding solace in the same stories that once helped him make sense of the questions surrounding his own beginnings. Growing up, he was quite shy, but as he grew up he came into his own. He credits a lot of that to his parents, David and Judy, whom he is very close to. He is their only child and was adopted when he was 3, and they were very doting on him growing up, he was the apple of their eye. He's always been kind and understanding, a quiet solace for his friends in their teenage years as he offered sage wisdom. His high school class mates joked he was a wise old owl from a Pixar movie; Will credits most of that to the extensive literature he's consumed. He's quite self assured and knows who he is now, but he didn't always feel that way. Growing up, he felt very different from other kids and didn't understand how they fit in so easily. It was like he was missing pivotal information that other kids had naturally, and so he filled those gaps with books, taking bits of their stories and weaving it into the fabric of his personality. He excelled in academics and was lucky to have found a good group of friends at his private high school, some of them also going to NYU when he did. He found a real love of creative writing and often writes poetry in his free time, which helps him stay in tune with his emotions. He's an avid journaler, which he uses to try and stay out of his own head and deal with the world around him. He's a lover of literature, poetry, and quiet beauty, and Will often feels more comfortable expressing himself through pages than conversation, carrying unspoken thoughts and unfinished verses like little secrets tucked between book spines. He hates conflict and will often give in and bend over backwards to accommodate someone, which can result in him being a bit of a door mat - but he's working on it. He's sensitive and empathetic, someone who's always standing up for the little guy... but not always so good at standing up for himself. He's dependable, giving, understanding, and considerate. He likes being there for others and is always happy to lend a hand if someone is moving or needs a ride home. He often remembers details most people overlook and always offers kindness without expecting recognition in return. Yet beneath that warmth lies a guarded heart. Trust does not come easily to Will, and he tends to keep his emotions carefully tucked away, fearful of burdening others or risking disappointment. He's equally nervous about moving to Merrock as he is excited; this is his first time away from home and out of New York City but he can't deny that it's also an awfully big adventure.
