William Tyrrell is an Australian child who disappeared from Kendall, NSW in 2014. His foster mother reported him missing from her mother’s house. At the time she said he was with his sister and was wearing a Spider-Man suit at the time of his disappearance.
Authorities, the media and the public initially believed that Tyrrell had been abducted. The foster parents have kept their privacy throughout the investigation. Their faces and names have never been revealed to the public. No one has been charged for his disappearance.
In 2021, after gaining new evidence the authorities renewed the search for Tyrrell in numerous areas around the house where he was said to have disappeared as well as surrounding areas in Kendall. The police stated that they were looking for human remains. Tyrells foster mother and his foster grandmother (who is now deceased) were people of interest. The authorities believed that Tyrrell may have died from falling off the balcony into the garden of ferns beneath. His foster mother denied the allegations that he had died by accident and his body was removed from the scene.
The foster mother was seen driving on a bush road close to a riding school in Kendall on 12 September 2014. Police believe this is when she could have discarded his body. The authorities stated that there were gaps in the timeline of the foster mother’s movements that day. They believe he may have died on 12 September and his body was removed before the two women called the police.
The police secretly recorded the couple which revealed the foster mother complaining that detectives had ‘fucked up’ Tyrrell disappearance and the authorities were now trying to ‘trip me up’. Whilst talking to a phone to an unidentified person, she stated, ‘They’re doing it because they fucked it up … They cleared the guy’ – referring to one of the earlier suspects.
Tyrrell’s body has never been found.
Tyrrell’s foster parents continued fostering children and got themselves into hot water for assaulting a different foster child. Tyrrell’s foster father was accused of grabbing a child by her neck; however, it was said that he grabbed the girl by her shoulders due to a 40-minute time-out. The child complained that she wants to ‘quit this family. I hate you – I hate this family.’
In another conversation the foster mother was recorded admitting ‘I kicked (a foster child) this morning. I kicked her hard. I’m not coping’. The recordings could hear her kicking and smacking a foster child. She was recorded threating to ‘slap’ a child on the face and ‘throw’ them around. She pled guilty to two counts of assault by smacking them with a wooden spoon and kicking them in the thigh. In one recording in 2021, there is a loud bang, a child is heard crying and screams out, ‘she kicked me’. The foster mother later apologizes to the child and then says, ‘(what) I’m trying to do is not respond to you by poking the bear. And I’m the bear.’ In another recording she is upset with the child about throwing items around the house, and she tells the child, ‘That won’t be the only thing that gets thrown around’ and says to the child, ‘You only seem to listen when I threaten to get violent’.
