Still life by Willi Oltmanns
Nearly finished with this copy (this post) after a painting by German painter Willi Oltmanns (#artist-original above). The original combines the edge definition and physicality of Cezanne with the vibrant colors of the fauves and impressionists. I spent more time measuring and checking the relationships between the elements on this image. However, after I completed the underdrawing (second image) I realized that the height/width ratio was way off. It still is. I’ll make sure to use more prosaic techniques (besides eyeballing and guesstimating) to get a more accurate foundation next time.
I’ll spend a little more time on this one to improve a few areas that I can see now are less powerful than the original - the flower buds are too pale, the background behind the table is too light and some of the shadow on the left pot is too harsh. Still, this was an enjoyable if time consuming attempt.
