Though he was inspired by New York City, Willi Smith wanted people everywhere to appreciate the culture and inspiration of the city. “Being black has a lot to do with my being a good designer,” he said. “Most of these designers who have to run to Paris for colour and fabric combinations should go to church on Sunday in Harlem. It’s all right there.” His friend, former neighbour and fashion editor Kim Hastreiter says this philosophy went deep: “He loved street culture and made clothes for people to wear on the street.”
. . "If he had lived, I think, #WilliSmith (February 29, 1948 – April 17, 1987) would have had a fashion empire as big as @PerryEllis or @TommyHilfiger. I wouldn't say his talent surpassed their's but Willi had that great talent by making casual clothes look expensive . . . that's not easy. . I met Willi my first day at @ParsonsSchoolofDesign in mid-September, in 1965. Parsons was then located on 53rd St. between 1st Avenue and the East River. Willi was, by far, the most talented of the class of 50. . I was constantly in awe of his clever fashion sketches depicting "Working-Rich-Girls" with long legs and funky shoes with bows. Some girls were white and some girls were black, and almost all, wore large round glasses much like the pair their creator always wore." — by Michael Vollbracht @vollbrachtdesigns . . 📷 © Nancy Moran/Outline Press . #whatisrememberedlives #theaidsmemorial #aidsmemorial #endaids #neverforget #williwear . He invented streetwear, was the most high-profile black fashion designer of the 80s and influenced a generation, yet fashion history has largely forgotten Willi Smith. #williwear #willismith https://www.instagram.com/p/CBdX7Rigz0c/?igshid=twn529ac8s3p
His label, Williwear, was ahead of its time: mixing the relaxed fit of sportswear with high-end elements of tailoring. His clothes were not meant to be untouchable, catwalk-only designs.

Spent the afternoon traversing my youth as I visited the Willi Smith exhibit at @cooperhewitt. I loved the way his clothes made me feel fashionable, in-the-know, and proud because he was a brother like me. ✊🏾👊🏾 • — — • #willismith #williwear #fashion #style #design #cooperhewitt #nyc #fortheculture #blackboyjoy #nativeson #SKWiLBUR #ItsAllInTheBag (at Cooper Hewitt) https://www.instagram.com/p/B9sQqQIpunX/?igshid=1vae5qj4agcyj
