Meet Willow.
Penelope brand new little sister. She is 2 weeks old and will be home in early October.
This bundle of fluff is 1 year old today 😭
so, turns out, willow may have an abscess insted of being tender footed? We had a new farrier come visit today and I had him look at her feet, he applied as much pressure as he could to her sole and she did nothing. Tried a hoof pick? Nothing. The little hotspot by her coronary band near a crack, that I was told was nothing? Very sensitive. Possibly heel sore as well, all what I suspected. Getting some hoof pack+epsom salts tomorrow and I’m going to soak her foot for as long as she tolerates.
Some of you may be wondering how I came to own this trainwreck of a mare.
I'd never buy something with this many issues, ever. Willow was a completely free indefiant free lease that was set up by my barn owners.Originally, it was supposed to be a single bay mare who's owner could no longer afford to keep her, having been in a divorce for five years. I was told she might need a refresher and a little weight but that was it, that she was 100% dead broke and wouldn't be something that would put my back at risk.
What arrived were two mares. Both needed immediate farrier care, feed, dental work. Danni, had shoes on, somehow, after not having her feet done for what looked to be six months. Willow has no heels, and some serious skin issues which are finally coming under control.Later that day, I found out she's had up to six babies who have been registered, and one whom died in a pasture accident. which means this lady has bred this mare despite being severely low on funds of any sort.
I choose Willow because dun, and Dani seems more standoffish than I would like.
So far it looks like Dani will be going back, as the girl leasing her can't continue and she's very aggressive on the ground and in the round pen. And by aggressive, I mean she is actively charging and attempting to kick whoever is handling her. Twice, out of the blue, she's gone after someone. No signs like swishy tail, pinned ears or a tight facial expression, one was a little girl who had her back to her, a good ten feet away.
Not exactly safe.
so unless she's a great ride, which I honestly doubt, she's getting shipped back.
Willow may have hoof issues out the ass, be so halter bred she looks like a potato, but at least she has a sweet personality.
Progress?! Willow was sound enough to on and off jog beside the truck today back to the pasture. I had her on a lunge line so if she decided to just stop, I wouldn't be dragged out. She kinda wove between the grass and gravel and at this point I let her choose whatever. She still head bobs and limps, not as bad as before. She even took off up the hill on her left lead (sorest foot) and kicked up with the other mares. Sadly it doesn't seem like tuff stuff goes very far at all, I used it sparingly and I'm at little less than half a bottle. I wish these tack stores carried more hardeners and less conditioners. I'm going to check the other co-op and see what they have.
June 2016
Willow has decided to crawl into Cora’s snuggle sack... but he’s definitely too big.
Trying to fit into things too small for him.. AGAIN.
my moms brother has this real cowboy aesthetic going on and idk what I'm supposed to do now that I've realized my uncle is a cowboy
