Rusholme Village in the Rush Hour

This image, from a time when the area’s roads were somewhat less crowded, appears in the collection of the Greater Manchester Police Museum and Archive.

The area is now a thriving centre for South Asian and Middle Eastern cuisine and is said to be home to nearly 100 food outlets. The area is also at the centre of Manchester student life.

We are unsure of the date of the image but think it might be the early 1930s.

While the area has certainly changed much over the years most of the buildings in this image remain largely as they were.

Cine City was a cinema in Withington, Manchester, England located at 494 Wilmslow Road. It opened in 1912 as The Scala, and was the third cinema to open in Britain.
