Rusholme Village in the Rush Hour

1930s

This image, from a time when the area’s roads were somewhat less crowded, appears in the collection of the Greater Manchester Police Museum and Archive.

The area is now a thriving centre for South Asian and Middle Eastern cuisine and is said to be home to nearly 100 food outlets. The area is also at the centre of Manchester student life.

We are unsure of the date of the image but think it might be the early 1930s.

While the area has certainly changed much over the years most of the buildings in this image remain largely as they were.

Last year, we had a British-Indian couple approached us for their renewal of vow ceremony. Due to Covid, the event is now officially cancelled. Originally, they would have their relatives in India coming to England for this ceremony.
