Brown Fish Owl of Sri Lanka

Common Name: Brown Fish Owl

Scientific Name: Its scientific name Ketupa zeylonensis means "fish owl from Sri Lanka", zeylonensis being a Latinized version of Ceylon (the former name of Sri Lanka).

This species is an all-year resident throughout most tropical and subtropical parts of the Indian Subcontinent to Southeast Asia and southeastern China as well as in Sri Lanka's water-abundant Wilpattu National Park.

Sri Lankan Leopard at Wilpattu National Park

Did you know that leopards although they are primarily nocturnal with some level of activity during dawn and dusk they also hunt occasionally during the daytime. They stalk and ambush their prey and dispatch it with a single bite to its throat. The leopard then leaves the carcass for many hours, usually until night time before it returns for feeding, whilst mother leopards share their prey with their cubs for as long as they live together.
