Why do Alzheimer's patients remember certain things and not others? Alzheimer's patients tend to remember things that happened longer ago better. Past events
‘Alzheimer's disease affects recent memories first. The retention of new information is most affected, while recollections of things that happened in the past are much more resistant. The loss of recent events is often one of the first, if not the first, symptom of the disease.’
Childhood
One thing that I have become aware of after researching and watching Iris is the fact that people with dementia can remember their past a lot more clearly than they can recent memories. I wanted to explore this by creating a visual representation.
My plan: I want to capture a portrait and rip it apart. This will create a damaged portrait, which implies that the person is damaged in some way, then I will layer an older image with it, which will be in perfect condition to represent that everything ‘new’ is damaged, but that the past is still fine.
