The name of this wind direction instrument derives from the word “anemos,” which in Greek translates to “wind.” Although there are several different types, they all work off the same principle of measuring an analog signal produced by the wind. That signal is then compared to standard values of wind velocity already calibrated. As a result, the anemometer measures an unknown wind speed, creating a readout that shows the speed’s value or number.
