Windows 10 Preview build 10158
And we’re closer to the final release of Windows 10, so Microsoft is winding down on introducing new features. Well, except that Project Spartan is now Microsoft Edge in this build.
Blank desktop, and I think the color-picking algorithm is finally realizing that my desktop is mostly orange. Oh well, I’ll miss the blue.
Apps and regular programs now share the same controls for the minimize/maximize/close buttons. Previously the regular programs had more condensed controls (and they still do when they’re maximized.)
Microsoft finally gives us the option to disable web search from the search app. This was one of the two features I really wanted (the other one isn’t in there.) Note that once you enabled Cortana, it pulls web searches regardless of whether they were disabled before or not.
Project Spartan is now rebranded as Microsoft Edge, and it’s at version 20.0.something.
The default Start page is not MSN as it was in IE, it’s a page with a search bar and content that looks like it was pulled from MSN. I don’t care about most of that crap so I changed it.
The new tab page has three options: A blank page, top sites, and top sites + suggested content (which is the crap for earlier I don’t care about.) Some of the top sites have apps in the Windows store, and you can go get the apps (though I much prefer opening them in a web browser instead of opening ten different apps.)
There’s mechanism for adding a new search engine. The help tells you you’re supposed to go to the search engine’s web page and then navigate to Advanced Settings > Search > Add new but it wasn’t working for Google. Hopefully it’ll be working by the final release.
You can still draw all over web pages, and they offer twelve colors to draw in.
There’s a dark theme, and pictured is the download manager. The other tabs for that are favorites, reading list, and history.
A few other things not pictured: The Photos app displays animated gifs just like other pictures, and Snipping tool can now take screenshots with a few seconds’ delay.
