Late-winter and spring mean frozen and canned food inventory, trying to use things up before the new summer's produce starts rolling in. These frozen wineberries (Rubus phoenicolasius) are the last of the berries I froze in summer 24. Freezing berries on a cookie sheet with a layer of waxed paper, then storing them in ziploc bags, is a very easy way of preserving. The strawberries I froze last year were so good - they were fragrant and delicious-smelling even while they were still frozen. Hopefully summer 25 will also be full of berries and cherries!

Back in 2022 I mentored an awesome student's capstone project on wineberry invasion with the goal of turning it into a report that could be used to inform conservation and land management in Athens County. We finished the report a year later and now, almost another year later, I figured out how to disperse it online. Check it out if you like tasty things!
