ICOB Vinemasters: Terry Theise
Candidly honest with his wine thoughts, Terry Theise is a passionate orator of Austrian, German, and Champagne producers in a way that captivates and entices. Interweaving sex, nature, philosophy, cosmic processes, and a plethora of day-to-day topics, Theise examines his wines in a manner that no other wine expert or importer can elaborate upon with such intensity and bravado. For example, his discussion on a particular vintage of German Rieslings, “2010, which by the way I can't help loving, was a wild weekend with a lover who took you so far past your limits you can't even remember what those limits ever were... The hot wax is still where it dripped on your body, and the hot shower makes the nail-scratches and tooth bites sting. It was amazing and wrenching, and part of you is relieved it's over and you survived it.”
Island Creek oysters, crab beignets, scallop crudo, and other tastes followed by a 5-course meal, Theise is the next host of our ICOB Vinemasters installment, Monday June 8th, and will discuss his favorite wine that is “an experience that’s both allusive and resonant...nothing matters but the wine. It tells a story with a beginning, middle, and end.”
The lead importer of Grower Champagnes and other small farmer-producers in Austria and Germany, Theise brought these amazing, obscure wines to the states to share and to bring about a movement, even a sense of momentum towards tasting a sense of place. When a wine speaks of one origin, this is the pinnacle of tasting. Theise believes we have no need to “demystify wine but to remystify it.” Come to ICOB, listen, eat, drink and taste for yourself with Terry Theise to expand your knowledge and taste buds on a heightened level of wine inspiration.
