Sass Pinot Noir 2018. The nose begins before you approach the glass; alcohol is prominent. Ruby in the glass with a trace of light brown. Cherry, strawberry, and cranberry on the nose, along with the tiniest trace of cedar. First sip is fresh with acidity. Sour cherry and blood orange blend, followed by just a hint of bell pepper. Tannins are minimal but lend balance. Sweetness is low. Light-bodied and refreshing. Despite its presence on the nose, alcohol is minimal. I was a little skeptical of this one when I saw that it used wild yeast as well as malolactic fermentation. Rich red in the glass. Dust and potting soil at first sniff, followed by lavender. Possibly some faint citrus as well. Quite lively on the tongue, sparkly feel though no bubbles. Far smoother and less tannic than I feared. Sour cherry, red currant, and a little raisin. Moderately sweet, just the right amount; any more would dull the speed of the experience. Black tea and leather near the end. This bottle would pair well with any number of dishes, light or medium-heavy, and would be a good choice for a crowd. If you have been on the lookout for a serious, yet wallet friendly Pinot Noir, the 2016 Aberrant Cellars Confero Pinot Noir is the ticket. Dark, brooding and savory, this has it all. Fruit, acid and tannins for days. A joy to drink now, but it can cellar for many years. Great wine to pair with richer foods including steak and game. Really delicious and I can highly recommend it.
