Wings are largely cosmetic, though extreme dedication and training has created some gliders over the years. People grow their wings usually at puberty, with very few clues before then of what type they will get. Obviously, there are boundless theories linking personality, skills or destiny to wings, but they generally fit into the same category as astrology - scientifically baseless, but tenaciously attractive.
Some can be self fulfilling prophecies. Insect wings are the only kind acceptable in major ballet companies, and their popular conception as light and delicate made them preferred by the Red Room as well. Bat wings being veiwed as "devil's wings" until fairly recently led many of their bearers to lives of crime, and still carry an air of darkness. (Tony Stark, of course, simply embraced their connotations, and a decade of dark reds and sharp facial hair made devilish the in style.)
The Red Skull's formerly unremarkable hawk wings literally exploded in the wake of the serum, leaving him with large but almost skeletal wings, whose tattered flesh continually oozed blood tinged lymph but never fully healed or rotted. Steve Rogers saw his perpetually molting pidgeon wings grow huge and white till they could only be described as angelic. (Well, the Howlies also described them as "obvious," "crowded" and "targets" but they weren't in PR.) While Bruce Banner retained his moth wings, the Hulk's unfolded to a scaled draconic marvel. It's unknown exactly how James Barnes' wings were effected by the serum, as Hydra replaced the bulk with terrifying bladed prosthetics.
Without other Terrans around, no one could even begin to explain to a young Peter Quill why his wings emerged as arcs of gorgeous light, but it made sense once he met Ego.
