Winnenden, Germany 1920
March 11th 2019 is the 10th anniversary of the Winnenden school shooting in Germany.
On March 11th 2009, 17-year-old Tim Kretschmer went into "Albertville Realschule", his former secondary school in Winnenden, and killed 9 students and 3 teachers. He then fled the scene and murdered a 56-year-old man nearby a psychiatric hospital before hijacking a minivan.
Kretschmer threatened the driver and told him to drive to Wendlingen, a town 25 miles from Winnenden. There, Kretschmer killed another 2 people and had a shootout with the police before committing suicide.
In total, Kretschmer killed 15 people and injured 9. He was armed with a 9mm Beretta 92FS semi-automatic pistol and fired a total of 112 rounds.
His motives remain unknown. Fellow students and friends decribed him as a "quiet, introverted person who felt rejected by society". According to police, Kretschmer had been treated for his depression several times.
When asked by the driver of the hijacked car why he was doing this, Kretschmer simply replied with: "For fun. Because it's fun."
