Brand New Day, Brand New Merch
On the night of July 1st 1931...Epic Flights No. 8 - Round the World with Wiley Post from the back page of Hotspur No. 1105, dated 20 December 1980. Art by Terry Patrick. DC Thomson.
Today marks a year since I came home to silence and instantly knew something was wrong. My heart aches for you every day my sweet girl ♥️
“Edmonton Awaits World Flier,” Edmonton Bulletin. June 30, 1931. Page 1. ---- Above is a picture of the Lockheed-Vega high-winged monoplane ‘Winnie Mae’ in which Wiley Post and Harold Galty are circling the globe. The fliers are now en route to Edmonton from Fairbanks, Alaska, on the second last leg of their record-breaking globe-girdling flight. Below is a close-up of the two intrepid airmen. Post is on the left. They are seen standing in front of the ‘Winnie Mae.’
We got a PUPPY!!!!!!!
Today I am sad to bring you this news
the first "official" hate crime in Clemson in more than 14 years.
Winnie Mae's is a local garden who try to grow socially, ecologically, and economically sustainable fruits and vegetables. They often donate food to Clemson Community Cares for struggling people and families, many of whom may not be able to get healthy food options (if any food options at all!).
The latest blog post says they are done. I hope they are not, but I understand the reasons for this.
Yesterday, Eli arrived at the farm to see smoke rising. Someone had attempted to burn the place down, including leaving a badly painted sign that said "LEAVE NIGGER."
I am saddened and dismayed that anyone would do that. I want to say something to the students of Clemson, many of whom have seen Winnie Maes, or eaten their food, although some of you might not have known Eli.
We live in a strange society that allows for a lot of bad things. Racism, sexism, violence, some stuff that we know and can say out-loud is "bad" but there are some things so ingrained into our system - that we have learned from birth - that we don't speak out against.
I challenge each of us to push back against these things. When you hear friends or strangers say something racist, some of you may find it easy to call them out on it. But when you hear, oh, at a party, that really attractive person make an racist joke and everyone laughs, it might be a little tougher. Challenge yourself to challenge them. You may think "oh it's just a joke," and that it is insignificant, but by just brushing it off, you are acknowledging its presence and allowing it and refusing to examine how it contributes to a world where someone, somewhere, thought they could and should burn down someone's garden and call them a racial slur, among many other horrible things. Don't say things like "I don't see color." Color exists. But racism doesn't have to.
If nothing else, please watch this video, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bf2LB0IG1xo to see a little bit of a different perspective.
Wiley Post and Braniff Airways:
Famous aviator Wiley Post made the Braniff hangars his home in the early 30's. In 1933, Wiley decided to fly around the world in a Lockheed Vega called "Winnie Mae." On the initial flight, the aircraft cracked up in flight over eastern Oklahoma. Neither the Braniff pilot flying the plane or Mr. Post were hurt. The "Winnie Mae" was trucked back to OKC by Braniff. With Paul's and R.V. Carelton's help, the aircraft was repaired, and Wiley Post made his 'round the world flight. He re-payed every cent he owed Braniff for fixing the "Winnie Mae."
