After taking the leap once finishing med school and residency in California, you had accepted an attending job in Pittsburgh. It was only a temporary position as a favour to a friend to cover as a night shift attending. However, what was a six month contract turned into a permanent role with a sizeable raise. The biggest perk was meeting your now boyfriend, Jack. He was older than all your exes but he was competent and charming, and never made you feel less than because of how important your job was to you.
Despite this, leaving Los Angeles for Pittsburgh meant leaving behind your group of close friends and the loft you shared with them. That's why one night while working with Jack, you received a call from your friend Jess asking if you were at the hospital. You answered immediately but she never specified what was wrong and why she was in Pittsburgh. Later in the evening, Chantanah, the ward clerk, had called your portable saying that there was a group of people in the waiting room asking for you. You told her that you'd meet them there.
Upon entering the waiting room, your friends from California were waiting in chairs. Jess, Nick, Winston, Cece, and Schmidt sat bickering with each other as Winston cradled his arm in a makeshift sling.
"What are you doing here?" You questioned slightly bewildered with your hands on your hips.
"We decided to take a road trip to New York since the airline strikes are still happening, and Winston managed to dislocate his shoulder."
"It wasn't my fault! Nick didn't reach further with the bag of sour patch kids." Winston cried out in defence.
“How was I supposed to know that you’d break yourself?!” Nick argued looking towards Winston.
“Anyways we had to pull over and use Jess’s car scarf as a sling.” Schmidt commented looking thoroughly annoyed.
You sighed shaking your head imagining the arguing and worse, introducing Jack to your friends, “come on, let’s go. You’re lucky it’s slower than usual tonight. We just had a bed open up.”
After dragging Winston and your friends to Central 8, you had asked Vivi to go get another doctor to do the work-up.
"So this is the place you left us for, huh?" Jess questioned casually tracing the outline of a body on a medical poster.
"Yeah. It's been good so far." You replied while hauling over a stood to log in and being up Winston's patient chart.
"She's ignoring the question... I know that look. Wait do you have a boyfriend here that you didn't tell us about?" Cece asked excitedly as she looked at you intensely hoping for an answer.
Schmidt, who decided to sit on the end of the hospital bed smiled at you like you were prey, "Oh come on, Y/N. Tell us about your super secret sexy boyfriend. Is he a doctor? Is this like Grey's Anatomy? Do you have your own Doctor McDreamy?"
“Why would she ever tell you that when you’re acting like… ungh.” Nick commented with leaning against a wall while snacking on pretzels, “man these are really dry. I need water or something liquid.”
A couple minutes turned into several minutes as you waited with the gang for another doctor to arrive. You were silently hoping it wasn’t Jack. While you loved your friends, you and Jack hadn’t reached that stage in your relationship where you met and mingled with each other’s friend groups outside the hospital. It was particularly harder for you being from out of state.
“How much longer is this going to take? I refuse to stay any longer in this medieval cesspit. I might as well be diving head first into a plague pit.” Complained Schmidt as he stared at the ceiling probably counting the number of tiles in the room.
“Guys,” said Winston from his bed trying to not wince in pain, “the doctor of the cesspit is here.”
You turned around on your stool to, of course, find your boyfriend standing in the doorway iPad in hand with an amused look on his face.
Closing your eyes and opening them again in exasperation, you made introductions, “Everyone, this is Doctor Abbot, he’ll be handling Winston’s care for tonight.”
You felt like you were underneath Cece and Jess's microscope as Jack examined Winston's shoulder.
"From what I can tell, it appears to be a subluxation. I'll need x-ray to confirm." Jack says while taking off a pair of gloves.
You nodded in agreement with his diagnosis as the others stood around waiting, "I've already ordered a portable x-ray. Techs should be here soon. Just need you to write the order for the good stuff before doing the reduction."
“Thanks, I'll be back when results are in." Jack glided behind you putting a gentle hand on your lower waist before exiting the room to check in on his other patients.
"Oh my god that's him." Gasped Cece putting her hands over her mouth for dramatic effect, "you do have your own super secret sexy silver fox boyfriend!"
You ignore your friend's outburst as you prepared the IV morphine. Where the hell is Vivi? Turning your head to Winston with an apologetic sigh, "I'm sorry in advance."
"Why?" He answered uncomfortably as you took hold of his uninjured arm.
"Because I'm shit at putting IVs in. Nurses are way better."
"Why kind of doctor doesn't know how to stick someone with a needle?" Nick scoffed from the corner of the room.
"Nick!" Schmidt, Cece, and Jess all exclaimed at once looking at him.
"Let her do her job Nick, you don't even like sharp pointy things." Jess retaliated from her chair.
"Yeah not since Winston nearly murdered me in my sleep"
"To be fair I was sleep walking and chasing a giant turkey that I had to cook for thanksgiving." Winston countered slurring slightly as the drugs started to work.
You moved around your group of friends disposing the used medical supplies before adding a note to the patient chart. “Okay, the techs should be here soon so all of you out.”
After ushering your friends out of Central 8, they began to disperse as you went to the nurses station to check the board for the next patient.
“So those your friends, huh?” Asked Shen who appeared next you on your right.
“Yep, they are.”
“They seem cool.”
Scoffing you rolled your eyes, “You haven’t lived with them. Jess is a dorky middle school vice principal, Cece is a former model, Schmidt a reformed republican and former fat kid with self esteem issues, Winston thinks leprechauns are real while Nick doesn’t believe that dinosaurs existed.”
Before Shen could even reply you heard your friends bicker in the background.
“So, Doctor Jack, can I call you that? I have this oddly Texas-shaped mole on the middle of back, and I’m wondering if you could take a quick look.”
Schmidt’s voice grated in your head like nails on a chalk board. “Nick! I can’t believe you’re soliciting free medical advice. You’re not even a patient here!”
“I’m not a dermatologist.” You heard Jack interject sounds almost perplexed.
“Well Schmidt, it was worth a try! What if this thing on my back is the start of some incurable disease that kills me and then wipes out humanity, huh? I haven’t already arranged for anybody to clear my internet history. I wasn’t trying to build a bomb! I was curious.”
Sighing you rubbed your hands over your face clearly done with this night, “I’m going to jump off the roof now.”
Shen laughed. “Make sure you do a flip.”
You stayed away for the next hour checking in on your other patients and waiting for lab results. Jack had Ellis assist in performing the closed reduction on Winston’s shoulder while you waited outside. After all was said and done, you followed the group outside while Jess pushed Winston in a wheelchair out to their rental car.
“I think I might’ve ran over a lizard with my wheelchair and I am ashamed of it.” Winston commented to no one still high on pain medication.
You laughed shaking your head, "Anyways, I'll miss you guys. But I'll see you all at the wedding!”
"We'll miss you too, and who knows, maybe the next wedding after Cece and Schmidt's will be yours." Said Jess with a sly grin on her face.
"That won't be for a while yet."
"Never say never L/N." Nick reached out to give you an awkward hug with the rest following suit.
Saying goodbye to your friends who were like family was always hard for you especially since you had spent all those years with them. You had practically grown up with the gang in your own weird, twisted adult way. Watching their car pull out of the hospital parking lot, you made your way back to the ED pushing the empty wheelchair. From a short distance standing in the Ambulance Bay waiting for you was Jack with his arms crossed and small smile gracing his face.
“I’m sorry you had to deal with all that.”
“Don’t be, they’re part of who you are. Although, I am professionally concerned about Nick. He’s convinced that he never learned how to read, just memorizing words?”
“That’s the least of his problems. Did I ever tell you that he thinks the moon landing isn’t real and dinosaurs never existed? And he call pigeons ‘sky rats’?” You offered now starting to walk inside with Jack by your side.
“I have so many questions.”
“So did Winston when he found out he was colourblind, didn’t realize that fruit were different colours.”
Jack grabbed ahold of your hand before pushing the doors to the ED open, “that makes our interaction so much more sense now.”
“Doctor L/N to trauma 3, Doctor L/N to trauma 3.”
“Gotta run.” Smiling at Jack you leaned in and gave him a short but sweet kiss on his lips that he reciprocated.
“We’ll talk more about this later.”
“You can count on it.”
