It was a dull but calm day in early February, and Algy's world was still cold. Not horribly, bitingly cold, but just plain, dull, ordinarily cold, such that it was hard to imagine ever being warm again.
And Algy was bored. There was rarely much to do in a west Highland winter, and even less inclination to do it, especially on a day when there was not a hint of sunshine or warmth. So Algy decided to visit the wee garden pond, to see whether anything was happening there. Algy loved ponds and pond life, and hoped that perhaps he might see some activity below the surface, but no… all was still and calm there too… as still and calm as the old stone Buddha, whose perpetual gaze kept watch over the water regardless of the weather or the season…
