Winter Coast - Winslow Homer, 1890

This painting that Homer completed while living in Maine has an incredibly unnerving perspective. What I originally thought were clouds are actually gigantic waves crashing into the rocky Maine coastline with incredible force. The man in the painting is a hunter, carrying a dead goose and his gun. Homer himself was an avid sportsman and hunter, and was a member of an exclusive hunting club in the Adirondack Mountains of New York. However, Homer depicted the hunter in the painting in a state of isolation, which became a common theme in his later work (contrasting with a strong theme of community in his earlier career). This hunter is dwarfed by the power that is nature, and Homer demonstrates his own force as a painter by using impasto (a thick, layering on of paint) in some parts of the painting, and almost no paint in others, to create an image of extreme moments in nature: a man in contemplation of nature's magnificence and power while being dwarfed by the waves and rocks.
