So as a reminder to friends in the southern US states!
There is supposed to be a nasty snowstorm heading your way this weekend. While you still can, go get:
A few gallons of clean water for drinking
Some preserved food that you dont need to reheat or keep cold (jerky, trailmix, cerals, etc)
Salt for your front steps
If you have a portable generator, take it out, set it up somewhere accessible and covered, and make sure you have fuel for it
If there are power outages, they're not likely to be able to work on them while the snow is still falling, so make sure you have what you need for at least two days longer than theyre saying the snow will last.
DO. NOT. DRIVE If you do not need to.

As the winter storm approaches, and a bunch of people are sharing tips, one thing that I haven't seen mentioned is opening your cupboards.
Any cupboard where you think there are pipes, and especially the doors under your sink. As long as you have power and heat, this will help the warm air to circulate near the pipes so they don't freeze.

The American South getting put under a Winter Storm Warning as they watch California burn to the ground:
So the forecast for Saturday here is a high of 28°F and my region is NOT used to that kind of cold. Schools here get delayed to keep drivers off black ice. Water mains can be found uninsulated on the underside of bridges (fewer now, because they tend to explode when frozen and get re-routed after).
I'm glad that I already have an emergency plan and kit set up in my house, with drinking water and food and a crank radio. I have glowsticks stashed around the house in case of power outage. We get one or two bouts of proper Winter here per year and nobody is ever ready for it.
