my husband ran into trader joe’s to grab something for dinner and i stayed in the car with my three children. i chose to spend those ten minutes staring at my kids. it could have been one of those in-between moments of life, the ones you never remember, where you’re waiting for the next thing and end up on your phone, but i chose to stare. my face had giddiness written all over it. i thought, “this is what i have always prayed for. what i always wanted. i am living my dream, by God’s grace.” my oldest realized i was staring and he immediately started beaming and said, “mommy! what?” to which i replied, “i just love you, that’s all.” and i continued to stare.

Balenciaga Winter23 invitation
i used to hate january
but for the first time, i think it just may be a new favorite month for this giddy, winter-loving gal. january is quiet. the stillness seems like it could last forever and for a mom of three it’s so delicious to not have a schedule that is filled to the brim with holiday activities, celebrations, family meetups, and the heaps of traditions that come with the end of every year. we have no plans in january. only a quiet, clean canvas to fill with the colors of winter: rest, hikes in the rain, bonding with my immediate fam, warm drinks, candlelit evenings, fresh bread, snow. january is the exhale after a long season of busyness. she beckons us to pause and enjoy the sweetness that she has to offer.
